& Geography Notes:
Notes on phases/geography:
- Initial release will occur along the Divisadero and Lower Haight
Business districts, with possible expansion to the Hayes Valley and
Duboce Triangle neighborhoods.
--- Hard to include Duboce Triangle without including the Castro bc of
Market Street.
- More businesses = better because more connections in neighborhood.
Currency to strengthen commerce in the neighborhood and encourage
business - business interactions.
- Ithaca Hours has 90 businesses on board before they had a business
plan; on-board businesses donated money to fund start of program - we
should do this!
- Invite farmers' market sellers to participate
- Possibly table at Farmers' Market one day for promotional purposes

3. Possible promotional ideas:
**These ideas can be fun, community building activities. We should do
our best to reach the right people (owners, manager) with our
efforts.**
a. carrot mobs
b. progressive carrot mob "crawl" where a parade of people goes to all
of the stores; evidence of people who want to use local currency
c. precede visits to merchants by sending in "patrons" who ask if the
business accepts the local currency
**Less fun promotional stuff**
d. create single page fact sheet for distribution to merchants
e. update cool bernal flow chart - tailor to our neighborhood, include
volunteering/participating as a way to get money, make more legible
f. Visit Divis, Lower Haight, and possibly Duboce Triangle Merchant
Associations BEFORE going out to individual merchants
g. Daily - window signs, smart phone reader, website, FB, twitter
(bernal has a good twitter site where merchants post about music,
events, freebies, reminders related to the business districts).
--------------------------------------------------
4. Benefits of Local Currency
**General**
Complementary currency does not work to contradict or undermine
national currency; it works in cooperation with government, business,
and normal parts of a capitalist economy.
-Build Social Capital/Community
-Nurture more Sustainable Lifestyles
-Work Cooperatively
-Micro/Small/Medium scale enterprise development
-Encourage localization of trade/relationships
-Support local businesses, reward loyal patrons, reward those making
investments in the neighborhood by donation time, money (value
triangle)
-increasing the velocity of money moving through the neighborhood
increases the wealth of the neighborhood (same $10 spent three times
in the same neighborhood = $30 of wealth).
**Other talking Points for Merchants**
-participating = access to large audience (free advertising) -
document number of followers, size of email list
-encourages customer loyalty
-retains money in corridor
-all people are paying in cash
-money can theoretically be spent among merchants
