Looking for a bit of guidance... I'm in the market for a new universal
player but I need to get one that supports ISO file playback. Thanks
in advance for your thoughts.

OPPO bdp 93 or 95,till a few months ago HAD iso support. If you,re lucky you'll find one!
If not you can try a "downgrade' to the earlyer firmware....

AFAIK, you cannot downgrade to previous firmware version.
However, another thing you can try -
I bought the Nuforce edition of the oppo bdp93 (slightly upgraded),
just as the new firmware was released, and it didnt have the previous
version but even an earlier one-
So my guess is the Nuforce stock is slightly older as it undergoes
other upgrades,
Chances are you can get a new Nuforce with the older firmware
(you can ask before you buy, this is what I did)

There was a player called the Dune (i think) that was able to do most disc formats and iso's.  I don't know what their current situation is but you may google that and see if it is another option.

I have a 3d TV.  So far you are not missing anything.  Gaming is the only bright spot.  Prometheus might help.

I don't own one, but I've been told the Dune doesn't play DVD-A ISO's (i.e. there's no MLP decoder). If that's true, it's a huge disadvantage vs. an Oppo 93/95 with firmware that still has ISO playback.

There is rumored to be a firmware hack that will restore ISO playback on an Oppo that has been updated with new firmware. I haven't investigated since my Oppo still plays ISO's.

At least one seller is listing Oppos on eBay as having ISO firmware:

Can I ask a really dumb question to the group, namely what do you mean by ‘ISO playback’?

I assume you mean a .ISO file that has the been burnt using ImgBurn or similar to create a DVD-Audio or SACD-R?

I’m confused because to me ‘ISO-playback’ can mean:

(i)                 burning an ISO image to disc as above

(ii)               playing a .ISO file from a data disc

(iii)             playing a .ISO file over a network

(iv)              playing an ISO file structure over a network i.e. the contents of an \AUDIO_TS folder in the case of a DVD-Audio or \VIDEO_TS in the case of a DVD-Video.

A few years ago I tried all these with limited success with Oppo DV-980H, Helios X-5000, Xbox 360 and another 100BaseT/Wi-Fi enabled DVD player I can’t even recall the name of. All fell down at multiple points in the GUI when trying to access 10,000+ songs from network storage. I recall the Xbox giving a single alphabetical list of either 1,000 albums or maybe even 10,000 tracks. Unusable either way. I would always end up listening to the ‘A’s….

The only one I still have is the Oppo DV-980H. This plays commercial SACD and DVD-Audio as well as ones I have burnt myself. Obviously it has no Blu-Ray playback. It could be a very cheap option to get one of these second-hand for SACD-R playback.

The DV-980H is the one non-networked player and was the one I kept.

The Oppo 93/95 players with certain firmware installed, will play DVD-A, DVD-V and Blu-ray ISO files from an attached hard drive. They will not stream ISO's over a network.  This was an undocumented feature that was added through a firmware update, and then removed last January when certain studios, cough*FOX*cough, objected due to a supposed association of ISO's with piracy.  Evidently, the ability to play 3D Blu-ray ISO's is what really caused the consternation by the studios. Since the Oppo universal players are first and foremost disc players that must have Blu-ray licensing by the Blu-ray Disc Association, the threat by the studios forced Oppo to remove this undocumented feature in a firmware update.  Many owners of the Oppo 93/95 haven't updated their firmware to maintain the ability to play ISO's. Note, the Oppo's don't play SACD ISO's directly, they must be burned to a DVD-R disc, or they can be streamed using Foobar and the SACD plug-in, or the DSF/DFF files converted to FLAC. The Oppo 93/95 players can play many other types of digital media files that previous Oppo models can't, but it's ISO playback that make it unique for a universal disc player.

The Dune is a different animal altogether, in that it is primarily a media streamer. It will stream ISO's over a network, although evidently not 3D Blu-ray or DVD-A ISO's.  However, the Dune, Popcorn Hour, and other networked media streamers will stream Blu-ray and DVD-V ISO's.

Thanks to all for your input and insights. The Oppo 93 was always my
leading candidate and based on these discussions this will be the
direction I go. My concern was always that using older firmware would
dismiss various bug fixes and other improvements that come with the
updates. It is my understanding that the 93/95 will still play the ISO
files when burned to a disc. The new firmware only prevents direct
playback of the ISO files.

It's the iso on HDD that they disabled and I think that is just for DVD-As if I recall.  If I remember correctly they still have support for AVCHD so there is an extra step involved but one could author their DVD-As as AVCHDs and have them play from the HDD.  That's one workaround.  I still believe you can play the VOB files from TS (not from the Audio DVD-A) if it no longer plays DVD-V isos.  There will be a pause btw tracks and no menu.  Then again you can always use DVD extractor to get the multichannel files from the iso and convert to flac or wav.  I've had some problems with the software on certain discs getting the correct stream (some just use DTS instead of DTS 24/96 for example) so it's not a method I use often.  It's actually very convenient to not have to switch disc after disc--but not the end of the world.

All ISO support has been removed from the Oppo 93/95, not just DVD-A. There are workarounds, but all have compromises. Ripping to an MKV allows streaming over a network, but HD audio (DTS-HD MA and Dolby True HD) is not supported, menus aren't supported, and DVD-A can't be played from an MKV container.  Copying a BDMV folder to a AVCHD folder will play, and HD audio is supported, but they can't be streamed over a network, and playback isn't always as trouble-free as ISO playback, There has also been the threat that this option could be removed in the future for the same reasons ISO playback was removed. Using M2TS as a container for BD is also an option and M2TS files can be streamed, HD audio is supported, but no menus or chapters, and playback can also be flaky at times on the Oppo.  For DVD-V, VOB files can be streamed, but no menus or chapters, and subtitles can be messed up. Converting DVD-V or BD's to other media file types will compromise audio and/or video quality.

All in all, by far the best option for using digital media on an Oppo 93/95 is ISO playback. There is no real alternative for DVD-A ISO's other than ripping tracks to FLAC or WAV in which case you lose menus, bonus materials, and most importantly, gapless playback that you get from the DVD-A ISO.  BD and DVD-V alternatives are all compromises compared to ISO playback. It's the reason the Oppo's with firmware that supports ISO playback are highly valued. Of course, you can always just play everything from a disc, which the Oppo excels at, but that's so 20th Century,

That's a good point, and I have a PS3 just in case there are BD's that come out that may be problematic without a firmware update on my Oppo. However, I have run across only one disc that has been a problem on my Oppo so far (the Yessongs BD, which is crap by the way). It played on my PS3, but not the Oppo. Just about any cheapie $75 BD player will perform about as well as the Oppo for BD material. Also, using DVDFab or AnyDVD to rip an ISO will most likely also remove any new decryption that may come along.

As far as new features? The Oppo 93 has been out for over 1.5 years, I doubt there will be many new enhancements, those will likely come with a new model. There could be some new video streaming services added besides the few that are already included.  However, there are other better, and much cheaper, video streaming devices such as the Roku. My PS3 is vastly superior to the Oppo for Netflix streaming for instance, although it's still low-quality video and subpar audio compared to Blu-ray.
