Does anyone know of a good resource that has all or most of the
multitracks available from the Guitar Hero and Rock Band video game
series? I believe they are in the .mogg file format.

I haven't found a single site that was very helpful. Some sites have
links to file sharing sites that are now obsolete. Similar to how
desertrat maintains his awesome blog, I think a multitrack blog would
be very cool.

I too have been curious about them (i.e. what resolution are they in?). I worry that although they sound alright on the average Joe's computer speakers/system, they might not stand up to the scrutiny of a high-end home system. Does anyone know what their quality is like compared to the DTS and DVD Audio titles we're used to?

I've obtained a bunch of these via torrents. The Rock Band songs have
the drums, bass, and guitar teased apart from the
vocals-mixed-with-everything-else track. Older Guitar Hero tracks have
the drums mixed in since there's no individual drum play in those
games. I haven't seen anything from the newest GH:WT game, but I would
expect it to be the same as the Rock Band tracks. The tracks I've
listened to have some "bleed-through" from other instruments on them,
most likely done on purpose to dissuade people like me from trying any
studio-magic on them. Even still, these isolations are much better than
anything that standard audio extraction could produce.

They sound pretty good, considering they're just Ogg Vorbis files.
Frequency analysis shows some drop-off after 17,100 hz, with frequencies
up to 20,000 having some presence (as opposed to MP3 where they're just
mostly not there). I see why people liked Ogg as a compressed audio
format, after taking a closer look at this. I think they would actually
hold up reasonably well when played in DTS or DolbyDigital.

I have taken it upon myself to mix 'Moving Pictures" by Rush in
surround, and it's pretty good if i do say so myself. I haven't gone
crazy with EQ despite being sorely tempted to do so. I will be
releasing this surround mix on the Hub (if there are any takers for it)
and hopefully it will get torrented and/or RS'd for mass consumption by
Rush fans and surround junkies. It will be nice to label it as "Not An
Upmix".

Cheers,
Russ.

Russ,

Would you consider sharing the original .mogg files that you have
obtained, or at least direct us to the torrent(s) if still active?

I got them by searching TPB for "rock band dlc" and "frets on fire",
which uses the isolated tracks. The torrents are still active, last I
checked. (Ignore any that just show the mp3s, of course)

Hey everybody, i have finished (for now) my mix of Rush's Moving
Pictures album, using the .ogg files made available from Rock Band. I
have the first track, Tom Sawyer, available in my hub share.
Please leave me some feedback on the mix, by email or on here. Once I'm
certain that all the tracks sound as good as they can get I will release
the rest.

I have purchased the Moving Pictures album many times, in many different
formats: LP, Casette, CD and Rock Band DLC. I am very, very happy that
I am able to breathe new life into one of my favourite albums. I
sincerely hope that My Favourite Band will consider releasing
surround-sound versions of their back catalog... so that I can buy it
all over again ;)

Cheers,
M_Pony.
