Never had the patience to work with multitracks. It really takes an
amazing knowledge of the source material, I think, to really get a
good result out of it. I'm also not a fan of channels going empty for
a long time, then erupting, etc. Just doesn't scream "surround" to
me.
Also not a fan of working with "Rock Band" stems or streams, but
that's another story.
Will check this out, though.

Ok so I gather that home-brewed mixes from stereo stems should not be called "upmix", but rather something like "non retail mix”, as in never released commercially as a mix, so non official...probably the best way to categorize it...as an upmix is also a non retail mix but clearly an “up” mix, so to speak, from single stereo source. I guess same tag should be applied to something brewed from (standard?) multitracks, like NIN’s Ghosts (?)...
And then obviously I as much info on the process done between the source files and the files being released should be in the torrent description and info.txt...including, very importantly, the resolution and lossless/lossy status of the source files...
Haven't had a chance to check out the DT though Mikey, but it sounds cool as I've never heard of stereo stems or this kind of process of home mixing before :)...

Seems there's different uses or definitions of these words like matrix
mix/blend/ultramix - as long as detailed info on the sources and the process
are included it's all clear ;).
I've always wished we could get access to the source instrument tracks
to make our own mixes. Louder guitars. Eliminate vocals, lower drum
track, etc. Trent Reznor (NIN) over the years has put out source
tracks in Garage Band, etc and that's a heck of a lot of fun to play
with. A long time ago (in the first dot com era) Thomas Dolby had a
site where he let you do the same kind of thing. Unfortunately
artists hate this sort of thing but I've always wished for it.
Sometimes you want to focus in on one particular instrument...
Slash's guitar. Geddy Lee's bass.
I even built a vocal stripper in my Radio Shack days to listen with
greatly reduced vocals.
Of course, now having multitracks available lends itself to custom
surround mixes as we've seen with the Rock Band stuff, and now, this.
Anybody have more info on multitrack fun?
