A person I know ( Mario Scalisse) made some DTS-WAVs from high-quality multitracks that he got somewhere. I heard them in my HTPC and sounds great. He asked me to submit it to the group, because you guys have the best setups to hear the musics and tell what it sounds like.

I really loved the spatial depth he brought to the music "Borrowed Heart" (just compare with the youtube stereo) and the subtle echo on the surround channels on "Holyday".

● Francis Dunnery & Dorie Jackson - Holiday (DTS 5.1)
http://www.4shared.com/audio/8G9tChlU/Francis_Dunnery__Dorie_Jackson.html

If the music from Jackie Greene doesn't play, just rename to .dts

By the way, can he be invited to the group? his mail is scalis...@hotmail.com

thank you

Funny, I used to live right next to Jackie Greene (a stage name). We
used to sit out on the porch and listen to him play blues and jazz all
night.

With that HQ sources I would definitely want DVD-Audio (or DTS-
HDMA)...

and btw if you could upload your multitracks or your mixes in
individual lossless channels (center, surround, etc) that would be
great. that way we can mix these into lossless surround such as flac
or dts hdma. Thanks again for sharing!

When people are just learning they often make mistakes and that is to
be expected.
One mistake we are trying to point out is to reduce really
HiResolution source material to very lossy DTS-CD is a very BAD
mistake.
But many people will not be aware of any other options, as most people
come to 5.1 from knowing it only as a movie sound track format and
they know nothing about audio. We can help such people understand
more.

If the source material is truly the 'multi track masters' (?) then
they should be preserved in the best possible audio format to retain
their high resolution.
People have already suggested they be transferred losslessly to DTS-
HDMA and on DVD-Audio rather than DTS-CD maybe in MLP. I suggest Blu
Ray also might be an option, if these truly are Multi Track Masters.
However they may be referred to as 'Multi Track Masters' by a person
whose 1st language is not English and who may not really realise that
multi tracks ripped from some karaoke or game are not really
'Masters'. The real 'Masters' are the ones made in the recording
studio and occasionally we do come across them or good copies of them
in the wild.
I remain unconvinced that these are true 'Masters' without some
provenance to prove them and/or being able to hear them, before they
have been murdered down to diabolical DTS-CD!

I respectfully suggest the original source material be uploaded to RS
or somewhere similar for us to download and evaluate. Just a small
sample for testing would be sufficient to start with, if uploading is
a problem.

I listened to your Jackie Green and it sounds like an excellent mix to
me.
Just a shame the 'masters' are in such a low resolution.
I prefer to listen to 24bit rather than 16bit but the mix is good.

I also enjoyed the Jackie Greene mix, thank you for providing them.
If you have the original .wav files before converting them to cd
quality that would be great! We can take those 48k files and convert
them to flac or dts hdma so there is no loss in quality. thank you
again.

Hello,
Thanks for sharing the fruits of your work with us. Unfortunately,
because of my real life duties I haven't yet got enough time to d/l
and listen to your mixes. I'd just like to encourage you to offer your
work at other music forums, too. Eg. on Quadraphonicquad,
SteveHoffman, SurroundByUs forums there are also lots of folks with
golden ears and/or with surround mixing experiences.
Cheers,

Hello Mario and welcome to the surroundsound group :)
Listened to your mixes and really liked them, though I have to say I'm
too happy with your Laura Pausini mix
(is the anything in the rear channels but the reverb ?) .. but then
again, that might just be me (I'm a big fan of "quad-style"
pan all instruments around you :) ) , and panning the revs away from
the source should minimize/remove masking on the source and make
it cleaner.
Speaking of clean, I noticed some things on he Hezekiah Jones mix
(both old and new version), there is a bit of noise at least at the
beginning (guitar amp?) , maybe running though, which is a bit off for
some semi-acoustic song in my opinion (would have removed/muted it).
See a screencapture from izotope RX:
Also noticed a little glitch at aprox 31,4 seconds into the song
(sounds like a crackle from vinyl), see screencapture here,
the little "ghost-transient" to the right:

To be fair, one would have to compare to the original and see if those elements are intended or at least in the original.

I've cleaned 2 most affected tracks (front left and surround left)

(only cleaned the first ~40 seconds, where hum was most noticeable;
saved in a FLAC format).

Its always best to do cleaning on the source level.
So, if you do a search for izotope RX on
http://audioz.info
you sure should find some (ahem) "extended demo version" of it ;)
BTW, looking for a full version of the song to compare it to finally
got me here:
http://www.shakingthrough.com/stems
.. where downloadable stems and raw tracks instantly grabbed my
attention (all creative commons licensed).

From a quick check on the stemfiles I'd say you should try to mute/
remove Violin_Lapstem_01 and 02 (or cut them where the main vocals
start and
fade out the parts there).
The only full (final?) stereo mix of the song I could find didn't have
an intro section but starts right where the main vocal set in, and
there weren't any violins
right there, they got in a bit later.

Very brave efforts but there are some of us that avoid DTS especially when
they are from Hi-Res - meaning could you release a set in FLAC please so
that that the hi-Fi heads amongst us can give these a good listen. You will
then get a broader review.

In order to make dts you encoded them from waves.  They are asking for the waves that you had AFTER mixing, but BEFORE encoding to DTS.  Instead of encoding to DTS it is just as easy to incode to FLAC.

Hi - Total Eclipse sounds very good.

The rear channels are used well for instrumentation, however to my ears the
vocals and backing vocals are perhaps placed too much in the centre channel.

The Sound Of Silence is perhaps limited by the original recording quality,
the mix sounds very bassy and slightly overloaded on my system, which is
unusual.

Am I correct you state below this is from 24bit 96khz? would like to hear
the original files if possible for comparison.

Thanks for your very interesting uploads!

Regards

Rob.

I agree liked Total Eclipse alot...still hear a bit of DTS artifacts in there but other than that it is really quite good.  I would have liked a bit more differentiation in instrumentation throughout the channels as it does sound a bit too centered as the person before me stated.  I found it to be slightly bassy but not in a refined way.  I would like to have compared this to the original that you worked with.

I think the crack comment has more to do with how many times this same thread has been posted and ended up in our mailboxes exactly the same on several dozen occasions.  We get it.  They're nice.  Several people let it be known they'd listened to and enjoyed the tracks.  I'm not so certain we need to be reminded of them everyday however.  But hey, if you enjoy ticking folks off, don't be surprised when they respond!  Not everyone likes to receive the same email day after day, week after week.  By all means post things--just not the same thing over and over.  I'm thinking this might be the origin of the 'crack' comment.

Mario, you should create a "New Post" next time you have something to

I felt compelled to say one more thing on the subject.  For all any of us know you could be producing the next S and G definitive surround collection.  In fact, I think most of here applaud that kind of thing.  Sharing files and the like is awesome. I hope you don't feel too on the defensive here.  But inundating people's inbox makes them question not only your motives, but for some, even your sanity.   Better to post once, maybe twice, and let it do it's thing from there.  Many people obviously enjoyed listening to your work so that is not the issue apparently.  Anyway I am not the arbiter of internet etiquette but I thought I would let you know that no one is encouraging you NOT to post.  Just perhaps be a bit more subtle.

I too have downloaded some of his stuff.  Nothing against his work other than his unwillingness to provide the lossless original master (we know he is not mixing directly in DTS).  My comments are as August stated and I stated before the last post.  I hate spam... multiple posts of the same thing are spam.

He published the same mail several times because he was fixing a problem with the first music (the links change in every email). But he should tell it on the subject, or better yet, to post on the hub just after testing the links and mixes.

But it's really nice to see people excited in doing homemade 5.1 mixes, because the industry is not pretty much interested.

I listened to these today. I used Tranzcode to convert then to a
format to be written to a DVD-A. Much better sound than DTS.

Anyhow very impressive how this homemade recording has better
separation and imaging than the commercially availble disc we have
talked so much about (Mr. Subliminal says err Wish You Were Here 5.1)

Good job anyhow and look forward to more music, but less posts about
where to find it :)

Hi again Mario

Do you possibly have an upmix of Déjà Vu -the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Im not sure if this is the place to ask this question but someone brought this up on my can posting that they recorded direct to stereo so we'd never see 5.1.  Though they used some multitracks after the first couple albums...but aren't all albums basically created for stereo?  Certainly not every album...I get that.  But what is the difference between one stereo recording and the next that would make it eligible for a 5.1 mix?  Presumably all masters are stereo right?  Is it the multitrack information that is needed to create the different channels?  I guess I am not understanding when something is an upmix and when it is considered discrete as such.  I got some education from the PF discussion we had...but I guess I am a bit unclear what constitutes the difference.  Can anyone explain or point me in the direction for an explanation?  I get a bit confused when someone says something can't be made multichannel because there are only particular masters available.  What exactly does one need to produce something that isn't an upmix?  I mean isn't all MC basically an upmix?!?!?  Sorry if this question sounds silly to some of you....

SBU ?? I don't understand this .. SBU ??

Thank you for your attention .. I'm happy
about my mix .. I keep a secret
but one thing I can say .. I used my Creativity .. hehehe
if I say .. would no longer be a surprise .. hehe

you may notice that the center channel
has a discrete instrumental (not vocals)

Why Sony Legacy has not released the SACD of Simon and Garfunkel ??
I can not understand this question
would be a SACD 5.1 success
High Definition version must be wonderful

Sorry my English

Not neccessarily a question directed at you Mario...I was asking the group as a whole.  Your post just reminded me of my question.  Sorry to interrupt your thread.

actually if you watch The Harmony Game Roy Halee explains that up
until BOTW evrything was bounced around on a 4 track and he requested
and recieved an 8-track for Bridge. Roy Halee is a master of
overdubbing and echo relations. I personally would label him one of
the only engineers mastered enough to use echo in proper and creative
ways. In any case, if Mario's creations are from discreet channels he
is working with 4 of them for the current things he shared with us.

I was speaking in a general sense not in reference to these particular recordings.

Ohh yes in a general sense most recording occured mono, then two,
four, eight, 16, 24 and 32 analog. In the digital relm we have
unlimited tracks in the box. Most master tapes are mixed down to
either four or two track for mastering and that tape is used to master
the disc to sound good on the intended format. It is said that most
record company vaults only contain the stereo first or second
generation which is then copied and sent to distributors for pressing
and distribution. Not so in the digital world where everyones copy is
basically the same.

The studio or the musician typically kept the multitrack master and
those frequently were given away, sold (rock stars need drugs too),
stolen, lost or destroyed which was the case when Todd Rundgrens
studio caught fire and destroyed forever Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell
multitrack tapes. If you read that Who interview about Tommy John
Astley hit the jackpot when they found multitrack masters at MCA
universal. This is not common.

To have original multitrack tapes of any band is indeed rare and to
have the equipment anymore to play a 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch multitrack
tape is priceless.

Thanks.  I did some reading on my own a bit as well but did not realize this abou the tapes. I would take your answer to mean just about anything recorded after say the mid 80s wouldn't suffer from this. Which would make most modern music 5.1 eligible from the gate correct?

In all my reading on the subject what I did not hear was this explanation that the studio often just kept the stereo master and not the multitrack tapes.  Of course I doubt they realized they might have a potential goldmine there at the time.  Surely they realize that now right?  Wasn't there a time in the early 2000's that lots of stuff was being mixed surround just in case DVD-A/SACD took off?  I've heard a couple studio people say the vaults are full of such mixes from that time.  I'm not so sure about what kind of demand there is going to be 40 years on for the definitive brittney spears in 5.1 if it takes this long to get a proper surround mix.  (FWIW I liked In The Zone...for a pop album not a bad surround mix)  Someone tell me the studios have much better control over masters and such than they did 40 or 50 years ago.  This 'some bloke burned the originals in the trash one night' doesn't sound very encouraging for some bands...I know Jimmy Page of all people surely kept every bit of everything somewhere just waiting for a rainy day like this one...

Yes that is correct however, in the Alan Parsons documentary they
explain how some artists have over hundreds of takes on a in the box
master and it creates chaos in the remixing process. Sloppy engineers
do not label the tracks so the remix engineer has no idea what to use
or not use. I believe this is what has happened on the Tull Aqualung
stereo. In my opinion Steve Wilson recieved a DSD copy of the original
multitrack of Aqualung and being he only knew the stereo version
guessed which tracks to use and made composites of tracks that were
corrupt or unclear which leads to a poor mix that does not sound
correct to a person who has listened to it for 35 plus years.

The WYWH may have been this way also however considering James Guthrie
did the original remix of the Stereo 15 years ago and had the Quad
version available there was an ability to do better. Another issue
that we never addressed on the 5.1 mix is whether Guthrie made it in
the box which would indicate he never really listened to the final
product and had no idea it came out the way it did.

In case you have not read that part, in the box refers to digital
recording that never enters the analog realm until it hits your home
DAC. It is assumed the mix will be perfect because it is digital and
there is no errors in that world.

I suggest you borrow the Alan Parsons DVD's on the subject. They are
very well done and you will learn lots about analog as well as digital
recording technique.

According to the recent interview post, all work on the floyd stuff was analogue realm up to digital master... apparently including a downsampling of that digital master from 96khz to 48khz which was done from 96khz digital master (analogue out) to (analogue in) 48kz digital 2nd master.

Hi there,
Not sure how much of this is obvious to you already, but I can explain
a few things -
Surround masters (5.1, 7.1, 4.0) that are mixed directly from
multitrack recordings would be considered 'true' or 'discrete'
masters. In this scenario all of the individual tracks (e.g. drums,
bass, guitars, keys, horns, vocals, etc.) are balanced out, filtered,
compressed, effects are added. etc... and then the tracks are placed
in the surround field in any way that the artist desires. The surround
master, if it is a 5.1 surround mix, gets recorded to 6 discrete
channels to retain the separation.

On a side note - After the surround mix is done, it is standard
practice to create a stereo version of the same song, which can be
down quickly by 'downmixing' from the surround master (all multi
channels get internally summed to a Left/Right 2-channlel master); or,
a new, true stereo mix can be done, which of course means mixing from
the individual tracks directly to a stereo master. This way the stereo
master can be mixed with complete control over all the tracks, rather
than being stuck with a 'downmixed' stereo version.

Now, to get to your specific question about upmixing -
An surround upmix means that a stereo Left/Right master is
electronically processed to create a surround master. This is used all
the time when needing to broadcast in surround. Let's say you only
have a stereo master of something, maybe there are no multitrack
recordings, or it is an old direct-to-stereo recording. In order to
get a good-sounding surround master from a stereo master (something
that will sound good if it will need to be downmixed to stereo at a
later time) you need a good quality application/processor. Something
like TC Electronics 'Unwrap' http://www.tcelectronic.com/unwrappowercore.asp.
I believe it pulls certain frequencies from the stereo mix and sends
them to the center, surrounds and LFE channels, making sure there are
no phasing problems.

To me, an upmix is really a fake surround mix, although there's
definitely a need for it.

Hope this helps,
Citysoundman

We need to send this definition over to the QQ guys so they understand
the term fake. A perfect explanation however. You can use the software
mentioned or others like it to create surround sound in the box
regardless of if it is a stereo or quad master or the methods I
mentioned by old schooling it analog through a home decoder. I in fact
have a sample of this method available of some modern rock I upmixed
simply because of some cool phasing effect in the tracks.

Just to be ahead of you, phasing problems occur when you have a
negative signal in the rear and positive in the front. They tend to
cancel each other out. The trick is to have your positive signal
placed in the field where you want it and increase the amplitude to
make it appear from the intended direction. The very basis of SQ and
QS quad reproduction. True surround sound creates imaging using
discrete elements. You may have the same information in all 5 channels
if you want the vocal or such to appear dead center in the room or
never vary from the sweet spot. Typically however surround is made to
have the listener in a single place called the sweet spot *(stereo has
this also) and use the same principals as in stereo mixing to create a
well imaged surround experience. This does not mean bouncing sounds or
swirling things around trhe room like ping pong balls, it means
creating an image with discrete elements. That is where the 5.1
Guthrie mix is fake. He basically unwrapped it and created a mix that
has no imaging, no discrete elements, and no sweet spot for that
matter.

In any case, a great essay from the citysoundman

Actually a great essay from both of you.  I basically went to wiki and read through the history although it is unfortunately kinda scant on some details, and bit technical with others so it was hard to get.  I actually got a lot more from you guys and these explanations than anything I got doing quite a bit of research on the interwebs.  I went over to the QQ site actually and tried to find what I could there.  There were a lot of technical things to be said for sure but not much that I guess I felt I got in the way of an education.  In fact most of the folks on there were raving about that PF album (?!?!) which surprises me as I was told that this was one of the older quad sites out there and that it was (perhaps once) filled with lots of former studio guys and such who knew their stuff.  Apparently they were not out en masse on the day the blu ray came out?  I definitely get that surround is not just things flying all around you. Although I like the flaming lips I found their albums a bit busy in that respect in that there was so much going on sonically that it became hard to focus on any particular sound...one sound panning one direction, another panning in a different direction...sort of like the phasing thing you brought up...they sorta cancel each other out.  YMMV of course.  I encountered what I believe to be a fake surround album all by myself!  The new Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds Boatman's Call (one of my favorites by him) was recently turned into a 5.1 travesty.  Beautiful album.  The better resolution works and nick is clearly more audible.  However it's been dolbyized.  Sounds as someone stated like it was made in the box.  There is virtually no information in the rears but an echoey sound.  Nothing discrete whatsoever.  Very disappointed.  Another thing I didn't waste money on thank goodness before I heard it.  If anyone has heard or knows of this one would you mind confirming my suspicions?  WYWH was a bit more of a challenge for me determining its genuineness.  I think the quad version was the thing that hammered the discreteness home but I had a harder time hearing it at first than some of you.  Must be learning something!  I kept thinking I put the wrong mix on as the phantom center on the quad was so strong I thought the center had to be on!  Thanks to you guys for taking the time to help me understand this stuff.  Great reads.
