I am banned from http://www.quadraphonicquad.com for putting my email in signature. So petty.

The mods are idiots. I was a long time member.

I wanted to give people a chance to hear some mixes.

Thought I would post on here instead.
5.0 mixes

Here is Sia Elastic Heart

I have done hundreds. Sound quality varies, but every mix I do now is EQ'dd, with effects etc, so I try to clean up poor stems. I also have many 24 bit files to work from, and many CD quality tracks done from wav files.

Hi Paul - thanks for sharing. Can you please explain where are the stems/multitracks sourced from and how are these mixes typically created? Eg. what process and software is used

Thanks,
Andrej

Hi,Paul.
This one :"Steve Vai For The Love Of God" is quite spectacular to my ears.

P.S.I'm waiting 4 more hours to download the "rock and metal" archive...I'm using a free mega account....

Hi
I get Stems and multis from many different sites, including reddit, ruttracker and
http://www.cambridge-mt.com/ms-mtk.htm#Pop

I use Acoustica Mixcraft Pro 7 and Audacity for mixing. Mixcraft for individual tracks, EQ, verb, deesser, compression, then import them into Audacity to arrange as 5.0 files.

I have mixed some of those.
I had to join literecords as a paid member to get Dream theater stems. I have full Black clouds album wav stems, will mix at some point.

There's no Zappa multitracks anywhere on the net as far as I know. I would love some of them.

Here's a new track, AC DC cover version

I am mixing Kings Of Leon right now, will be done soon

AC DC live, plus great cover
Sia, Sabbath, Katy Perry, Arana Grande, Alice in Chains Bon Jovi, Madonna, Opeth, L. Park and some you will never of heard of because they never put out an album, but the songs are good.
Plenty of 24 bit tracks, some mixed from raw multis, others stems.

Many of these are from 24 bit flac stems or wav multis. Only a few are from moggs, and they are no artifacts in nearly all of them.

Free version allows 50 Gb up, but 5 Gb down !
I used Stems in the past too. You cannot tell if they come from MOGG or another format after they are converted to wav or flac .
I did Foo Fighters and stopped halfway with DSOTM (24/96 Flacs) because of the artefacts.

eg: The Black Crowns Flames is a hard rock track mixed from raw multitracks that the band put up. 24 bit files. No mogg whatsoever.
I mixed it twice, very good track. Listen for yourself.

Like you say : nearly....
But whenever I hear an audio file with artefacts, the pleasure is gone for me.
Downloaded your Aha file and listened to several. Most are pretty good, but the ones with artefacts..... bluh !!
Example : AIC - Heaven besides you : bleeding of the voice in the front left and right : artefact ! Sounds like the stereo has gone trough a vocal remover, but it didn't remove all !
Another one : Aha. Compare the voice with the voice on the regular stereo record......... is it another singer ? LOL !!

You can do nice things with Stems or MOGGs but need to be very careful because not everything sounds very good .
I know in a mix most of us will not notice the artefacts. But I prefer less separation with a perfect sound instead of (almost) discrete channels with a not so good sound.

FWIW I am an upmixer for 17 years now and very experienced. I wrote my own methods (www.dtsac3.com) and upmixed more than 5000 albums.
My upmixes are not as discrete as mixes from stems, but I can do any album you give me, so I'm not limited to whatever is available in Stems.
And...... my upmixes are artefact free !

Some stems are just not that great. Snares can sound terrible because the modern trend is to add a sample.
AIC heaven besides you is not from Mogg files. Bleed happens. It is part of the production.

EITHER LISTEN OR DO NOT end of.

Yep, I saw that : on W7 I had to wait 6 hours before it would give me another 5 GB. The file is more than 11, so after 10 GB another 6 hour wait........
Unfortunately my PC's are too busy to use more than 15 hours for a download of which I don't know what it contains........... So I gave up and downloaded a smaller one ;-)

First of all I do like everyone's effort to give us surround sound , so you get my respect for making and sharing them.
But first you said there are no artefacts and now "It's part of the production" .
Which production ? The original Stems or your mix ?
I saw you mentioned a lot of your production process and my conclusion is you have to do a lot steps to get the final result.
But there are some steps that take it away from the original sound (Sound as on the stereo version !) like using EQ.
It changes the tonal, like the voice on Aha.
If the Stems are artefact free, the surround version should be too ! If your production process introduces artefacts, there is something wrong in it !

I know bleeding of the voice is a lot of the times something that cannot be fixed and shouldn't be a problem in the final mix, but I do consider
it an artefact.

BTW I never said or suggested AIC is from MOGG's.

And last : you don't have to shout at me .PERIOD !
It's cheap to say listen or don't. Does that mean you are not open to any criticism ?

When I do post some criticism, it's meant to be an addition for you to get better results. Not because to nag !!!!
(I also said there were several songs I liked very much......)

Raw means no effects.

Every stereo mix has effects. Raw files often sound like crap to begin with. The Black Crowns was mixed from raw 24 bit wav files.

I can not always match the retail version. Who knows what effects the engineer used? It does not work like that.

EG; I have stems from Rage against the machine killing in the name of. The snare sounds nothing like the CD version. They added a sample to it and blended it in for thickness. No way I could have any idea how that was done, so if I mixed track snare would be different than retail.

Some stems have bleed on the individual tracks from other intruments/ vocals
some mogg file have artifacts

two different things.

Stems/multis are NOT THE ORIGINAL SOUND you heard on the stereo CDS.

I have plenty of multitracks that sound different from the final version. I am not making it different. You are hearing closer to raw version on some of those pop tracks I did not take much effort with. Depends on whether I like a song a lot or not. Some tracks I have done a dozen times to be happy with.

What you hear on CDS etc is processed with EQ, SATURATION, VERB, COMPRESSION, SAMPLES etc.
If one mixes stems or multis that are pretty raw there is no way to exactly match CD.

I think my Rooster mix sounds better than SACD mix. It is not the same, I have bettered it, sometime I can not. Some mixes are from mp3 files, some from 24 bit. I have done some Korn mixes from 24/96 hi rez files.

Nobody loses. Delete what you do not want.
I am not responsible for the sources.
