i found this group by chance and though i do love DTS & stuff and i am
looking mostly "classical" po & rock music in 5.1 sound i am very happy
having found this group.
I got a question now. What is "GART" - i searched the group and i tried
to find an explanation via google and my known audio & video sources on
the web, but with little success. All i found out is that gart seems to
be a 5.0 or 5.1 upmixing-method.
Can you please tell me what is meant with "GART"
Cheers in advance.

The technigue involves a couple dozen steps performed in Adobe Audition on
either analog 96/24 cd rips or upsampled digital cd rips. The process
requires phase inversion and combination technigues performed at 96/32 that
allow the extraction of sounds within the existing stereo spectrum and
therefore is dependent upon the panning that exists in the original mix.
These steps are accomplished by over a dozen scripts that help to automate
the process to some degree but a still as single album will take up to 24
hours of processing and a multitude of manual steps before the basic
extractions are ready for remixing.
Remixing is done with Nuendo and care is taken to keep the sound as true to
the original mix as possible while attempting to widen the spectrum to allow
sounds panned to the extreme sides to be placed in rear speakers. The same
attempt is made to put the centered material in the center speakers and the
mid-panned material on either side to go to the fronts. Levels are monitored
but great care is taken to retain relative instrument levels without
artificial boosting or attenuating any one section. The technique strives to
avoid the artifacting that seems to plague most of the one-click or set it
and forget it upmixing methods that predominate. The other drawback to many
of these methods is that they, being fully automated, will sound artificial,
thin and disembodied. They just don't sound true to the originals in many
cases and give upmixing a bad reputation.
One resulting mix is then saved to six 96/24 wav files which are fed
directly to Surcode MLP encoder for the DVDA files and are downsampled to
48/24 with R8Brain using the highest quality settings for use with Surcode
DVD to create DTS files and Sonic Foundry's Soft Encode for Dolby Digital.
That covers the extraction, remixing and creation of the sound files -
authoring to Hybrid DVDA is a lengthier and more involved process that I
won't go into unless someone wants to hear about it.

Wow! I never realized all the steps needed to create the DTS upmixes
that you folks (e.g. GART and TOUP) provide to the DTS music community.
I for one am greatly appreciative of your hard work and constantly
scour demonoid.com for your latest and greatest releases. I accidently
discovered these DTS music torrents a few months ago and have since
acquired a rather large collection of titles that are perfectly
compatible with my current home theatre audio setup. Since I am a
monstor Beatles fan - I first managed to collect all of the great TOUP
Beatles releases and then gathered all I could find from other DTS
music suppliers both commercial and via torrents.
I was overjoyed to discover this DTS music solution because I
originally started looking to upgrade my home theatre system to use an
SACD / DVD-Audio player but, to date, I have not upgraded because it
seems that it is not possible to go from SACD or DVD-Audio via optical
or coax digital audio connections to my existing AV Receiver. Near as I
can tell, it would require a receiver with 6 analog inputs and even
this has serious drawbacks (e.g. lack of base management). If I am
wrong and current SACD and DVD-Audio technology does not require analog
channels then please let me know (I am still a novice at this - but am
a quick learner). At any rate, I am very happy with the quality of DTS
and Dolby Digital music and, until the commercial surround sound music
companies get their act together, it is IMHO the way to go to get great
5.1 surround sound music.
Thank you and please continue with all your high quality upmix
releases. I assure you that the DTS music community appreciates the
effort.
Regards.
Thanks
