Hello all. I recently d/l'd the 3.6 GB version of WYWH from
RapidShare. This is the version with MLP, DTS, and Dolby 4.0 mixes. I
noticed that a few minutes of Shine On appear to be accidentally
spiced in at the end of Welcome to the Machine. Has anyone else
encountered this problem? More importantly, can anyone point me to a
"correct" version of this DVD-A? Thanks.

Hi

This IS the correct version, the quad mix was the original version, that section was removed during the initial stereo mixing stage. I had the original quad lp and this is the right version. Plus the bbc transmitted the quad mix in Matrix HJ around that time (have lost the tape), and this extra part was there also.

If you listen the the stereo mix, you can ear where that section was removed, and not to cleanly either.

Wow, that's bizarre. I thank you for clearing that up. I must confess I cannot hear where it was removed from the stereo mix, tho.

Many Quad mixes were wildly different from the stereo versions, the one I always use as a perfect example is Janis Ian's "Between The Lines". I only ever heard the quad mix ( as I had the album, and for many years only played them in stereo) and when a friend played the stereo version some years later, I barely recognised it! Another album that caused quite a stir was Neil Diamonds album (the one before beautiful noise I think) where the stereo mix was heavily criticised by the press and public alike, but the quad mix was superb.

There was a call for CBS to withdraw the stereo release and replace it with the quad one, which they agreed to, but only after the pressing they had of the stereo mix they had in the warehouse sold out. As you can imagine, that never happened!

That's "Serenade." An excellent example. Another good one is Steely
Dan's "Can't Buy A Thrill", where the Quad Lp has lots of extended
vocal and instrumental parts, added reverb on some tracks, and even an
extra-length track or two.

Hey! Can anyone link to that file for me?
I'd much appreciate it. Thanks

It's on the Surrund Hub in several folks' shares. Ask VF for an invite
and join the party!

That extra bit appears exclusively on the SQ quad vinyl issued by
Columbia in the U.S. It's not on the Columbia 8-track, nor is it on
the British Harvest vinyl. To me, that screams out "mastering flaw",
plain and simple.

There are some other, deliberate differences that make it easy to spot
the quad vs. stereo versions of WYWH, in turn making it easy to spot
whether the various DTS and DVD-A torrents are sourced from genuine
quad material or derived from stereo.

Sorry to burst your bubble but i purchased the Harvest UK record the day it was released and it WAS there. It was also there on the BBC broadcast of the original 4 chan tape when it was broadcast on the Alan Feeman show in Matrix H (or HJ) as a special quad broadcast.

I've got Q4SHVL 814 myself--in fact, in fruitless search of a non-
noisy pressing, I've had several--and it's not on the one I have now,
nor is it on any other I've ever had. Maybe the original Harvest
pressings did have that problem, though you're the first person I've
ever heard claim it. It's clearly not on subsequent UK quad
pressings, it's not on the US quad 8-track, it's not on any stereo
version I've run across *and* it sounds completely ridiculous on those
pressings where it does exist. It's impossible to believe that it's
anything other than an error.

In fact, I've read unverified claims that one reason the U.S. quad
pressings are so rare is due to Columbia recalling the title to fix
the problem...and then never bothering to follow through. I don't
know if that's actually true, but I do know that I've seen quite a few
British pressings and exactly one U.S., despite living in the U.S.
where one would expect it to be more common.
