What is the current situation with audio file extractions from The
Beatles: Rock Band video game? I haven't heard anything about anyone
being able to crack the encryption on the game. I was looking forward
to utilizing the extractions to create surround sound audio discs.

Interesting. I might download. I've heard that the Beatcomber system to extract the Rockband tracks results in some phasing artifacts on each track and that it does not completely isolate the other instruments on each track. For this reason if you were to use these extractions to create 5.1 mixes, it might sound like a swirling mess. It'd be a lot of work, but perhaps the slice technology (used to create upmixes from stereo sources) can be used to further isolate the instruments on the Beatcomber extractions so that cleaner 5.1 mixes can be made.

What we really need is for someone to crack the game and get the mogg files (like was done with previous Rock Band releases) so we can convert these to wav files and use them to create the 5.1 mixes.

It's hard to believe that some wiz kid out there couldn't do this. This might be a generational thing. The earlier Rockband versions were cracked really fast. Maybe the wiz kids don't care as much about cracking Beatles stuff as they did cracking Metallica?

Greg,

I am with you on the who .mogg file issue. I don't know if the other
"extractions" that are being torrented are worthwhile.

There is no isolation tracks. Even thought they recorded in multi
track most of the track are live and there is bleed from across the
studio or from headphones.

Not surprised to hear this. There have been other Rockband extractions done (Metallica, The Cars, Rush) where the games were cracked, the audio files extracted and post-extraction clean up was done to remove bleeding. In the case of Beatles Rockband, the game has not been cracked - people have used various programs to try and isolate the instruments. From what I've heard, these programs, while partially effective, leave phasing artifacts and do not completely remove remnants from the other tracks. This would make a proper 5.1 mix impossible - for instance having guitars in the front and bleeding of the same guitars in the rears would make the guitars too loud, bury the vocals, etc.

There's no question that there are people out there with the know-how to crack the game. Apparently it's not been high on their priority list over the past 3 months. I'm still hopeful that one of the young whiz kids' dads will turn him onto The Beatles, make him take a break from playing video games and get him to crack the game at some point.

I downloaded the files (flac) and when I converted them to cd only the
first 10 tracks or so worked. Anyone else have this issue?
