Good Flights (June 8th)

JD and I have arrived safely in Peru. This year, we arrived at Dulles airport without incident (no flat tire like last year). Our first flight from Dulles made good time and arrived in Atlanta 40 minutes ahead of schedule. After making our way to the gate for our next flight, we had a little over three hours to wait. Our next flight to Lima was a few minutes late and arrived in Lima five minutes after our scheduled arrival time. The problem with arriving in Lima at 11:00 at night, is that there are several airlines that all arrive at the same time which makes the lines at immigrations long. Since we also had been so early to arrive in Atlanta, our luggage was some of the first to be loaded into the plane and some of the last to be unloaded but we did get it all. We then went to the house of the missionary with whom we will be staying for part of our trip arriving around 1:30am. We partially unpacked and then went to sleep since I had to get up at 6:00am to go to teach 4th grade.

Substitute Teaching (June 9th-11th)

I am half way through my stint as a substitute teacher at LMCS. The first day was a little of a challenge as I learned the class routines and students' names but I was actually more awake than I expected even if I was only operating on four hours of sleep. Each day has gotten a little easier as I make the necessary adjustments. Just like with any class, there are a variety of students and learning to deal with each is part of being a teacher but also part of the great opportunity to minister. Sometimes it is a matter of showing God's love by listening to their stories. Sometimes it is a matter of showing that God is a God of order by teaching the students to follow the procedures. It is also teaching students the value of people over sports when a student gets upset with another student who allowed a goal to be scored against his team during recess. It is showing concern when another student skins his knee during recess. It is teaching the story of Joseph during Bible class and how he sought to glorify God even when the circumstances were not fair and how he did not seek revenge when he had the opportunity. It is reminding the students of our sin nature and need for Christ as our Savior when a student comes up with an example sentence ("I am moral") for one of his vocabulary words. It is an amazing responsibility that God gives us to train up our children. May we all do it with humility and while seeking His wisdom.

Assisting with the school play (June 10th-11th)

During this weekend, in order to help raise some funds for the school, the school is performing three presentations of a play. JD has been helping during the day with setting up the church for the play by helping to set up over 400 chairs in the auditorium, making stage adjustments, and any thing else that is needed. During the Thursday and Friday night presentations, I also helped as an usher helping people to find their seats and helping to maintain the order.

A day to catch our breath (June 12th)

Today, we were able to sleep in and then go out to eat for brunch with the drama team from the USA who is helping with the play. JD has also become good friends with Jason Pace, the son of the missionary family where we are staying and they have had a chance to do some chores together as well as make paper airplanes and test them, and play other games and activities. Tonight, JD will be staying with the Paces to help with the play and clean up after the play while I will be going to Los Sureños to spend the night before preaching in Sunday School and the morning service in Sureños in the morning and then in Pachacutec in the evening. I will return late Sunday night to the home of the Paces so I can get some sleep before returning for three more days of substitute teaching.
