A Much Smaller Group This Year

Over the last few summers, we have taken teams of students with us to Peru for short term missions trips. We were not planning on taking a trip this summer but since we were able to find some tickets at a really good price, JD and I will be headed to Peru this Tuesday, June 8th through July 1st.

Substitute Teaching (June 9th to June 16th)

I have always told my team members that they need to be willing to be stretched by God during our trips. This year the Lord will be stretching me by allowing me to substitute teach 4th grade at LMCS (the main Christian school with which I will be working once we arrive full-time) for the first week that we are in Lima. Though I am more comfortable as a high school teacher, I will have the opportunity to interact with the students, teachers and administration as I become more familiar with this ministry.

Over the Mountain and to the Woods ... (June 17th to June 21st)

Peru is divided into three geographic areas: the coast, the mountains (the Andes), and the jungle. Lima is located along the coast and is where we have concentrated our efforts over the years. On the 17th, we will travel over the mountain and to the edge of the jungle where on Saturday the 19th, I will be conducting a teacher’s conference (for mostly Sunday school teachers) from around 9am to 2pm and then a family conference from 4pm to 8pm.

I was originally planning on doing a youth conference in the evening as I have done in Lima, but the pastors have requested that we do a family conference instead. This area of Peru is known for husbands who are abusive to their wives and for the lack of strong families. I will be speaking about the responsibilities of the husband, responsibilities of the wife, and the responsibility as parents. The local churches could be a great model in the community of Christ’s love if the husbands would be willing to demonstrate their love for their wives by giving of themselves just like Christ gave His life for the Church.

On Sunday, I will be able to preach in two different churches before returning to Lima on Monday the 21st.

School Observations (June 22nd to June 24th)

As one of my ministry goals is to work with the training of teachers, I will be learning more about the educational system of Peru by spending three days observing in a few different schools. I will have the opportunity to review curriculum as well as observe their philosophy of education, teaching styles and discipline procedures.

Shopping (June 25th)

One of our objectives for this trip is to do some “shopping.” We want to record the prices of the different items that we will need to purchase once we arrive as well as for everyday living. We also will be researching specific areas for housing that would be secure and yet affordable. With this research, we will be able to more accurately adjust our budget needs.

Other Ministry Opportunities (June 13th, and June 26th-29th)

During the two Sundays that I will be in Lima, I will have the opportunity to preach in a couple different churches. As we did last year, we will be also be hosting both a teacher conference and youth conference on our last Saturday in Lima. To finish off our trip, I have also been invited to speak at a church retreat on Monday and Tuesday, June 28th and 29th, before returning home overnight June 30th into July 1st.

While We Are Away, the Girls Will Play

During the first week that JD and I will be in Peru, Debbie will be taking Amy and Julia to visit some friends in Michigan. A special treat for Julia will be to go to camp this summer for the first time. She has heard stories of camp from JD and Amy but this will be the first year that she will be old enough to go herself. She will be going with Amy who will be going for the second time. JD was originally concerned about Debbie being alone for the week that we will be in Peru and the girls are gone to camp but she was able to reassure him that she would be OK as she does have some good friends in the area that she can visit when she is not enjoying the change of pace.

More Updates of the Trip to Follow

While we are on the trip to Lima, I will be sending emails with pictures on a more frequent basis. Please be praying for us as we minister in Peru during this month.
