Hi all.
I quite recently bought an Epson perfection v850 and i'm trying to decide which software to use for scanning 48bit raw images for tweaking (reflective scanning of objects, not film scanning).
I have been using silverfast se plus 8 which came with the scanner, and my raw scans are very dark and i discovered i need to get additional software to make use of them properly.
What would you recommend i do?
The easiest and very fast way to copy slides is with the nikon d850 and the relevant slide copying attachment and a led studio light. Scanners are way too slow for this. Results are excellent and if one has difficult slides simply do them HDR. Topaz sharpenAI also is great for fixing soft slides. Shoot with the emulsion side to the camera and then reverse the slide in Lightroom for absolutely accurate focus.
A few weeks ago, we took you behind the scenes to tell you about the move to our new studio. Now we're back with another look behind the curtains to show you what's involved in setting up our studio test scene.
I like to hear from actual users as why and how they use the two scanning software package. First person experiences only please refrain from using third party reference material you found on the web. I'm hoping this will help people new to scanner software make an informed choice. I will start:
Before I use epson scan and it was OKAY for 35mm even decent for medium format.
Then I brought a dedicated 35mm Plustek scanner. bundled with Siverfast Se 6 plus.
After reading the manual which by the way insults the user by implying that your Silverfast version is only designed for amateurs and if you are an expert you should upgrade immediately. (I put this down to a translation from the German language but I'm not so sure.
After experiments I found it would only output a 16 bit or a multiscan in a propriety format that only their HDR software could handle. Use of colour profiles would also need an upgrade. So I inquired about the upgrade and found out I would need almost the price of the scanner to pay for it. The final insult was when 6 months later version 8 came out they wanted another chunk of cash just for the version upgrade.
I guess Silverfast would be okay if you used some more of their software for much of your workflow.
When Viewscan offered the Pro version of their software for a nominal fee in exchange for not using silverfast I jumped at the chance,
The $80 without the discount Pro version.
Positives
-no fee upgrades for life
-works on all 3 of my scanners
-does everything the more expensive Silverfast does including colour profiles and multi-scans.
-Can output in 48bit RAW tiffs or adobe DNG formats this allows me to move post scan processing moving out of the scanner software and easily integrate the steps with my current Lightroom workflow.
The only downside for me is that the interface and manual look like something from sometime earlier in the century.
I guess that some will find that Silverfast keep it in the family workflow works for them but not for me!

Whereas if we talk about Silverfast then it offers different type of package such as for SilverFast HDR to HDR studio upgrade, you have to pay $199, for SilverFast HDR to HDR studio Photoproof pay $679, for SilverFast Ai 6.x to HDR studio ( for upgrade) pay $399, for full version pay $499.
