The 2019 Surface Analysis short course program will be held in the Dolphin Room at the Sailport Waterfront Suites on Tampa Bay, 2506 North Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 USA, 25 February - 1 March 2019. The courses will be given by John Grant.

The comprehensive "X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS/ESCA) including Data Processing" course is 3 days, and a 2-day hands-on course on "CasaXPS Training" will be offered as well.

This five-day set of short courses will be devoted to X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS/ESCA) and the Processing of XPS/ESCA Spectra. These courses are designed for scientists, engineers, technicians, and students, who would like a detailed understanding of the principles and uses of XPS/ESCA, and Data Processing for surface analysis and depth profiling. The two courses can be taken as a 5-day package or individually.

The first 3 days, 25-27 February will be on X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS/ESCA) including Data Processing. It will cover these topics in detail (see the course description http://www.surfaceanalysis.org/xps_and_data_processing.html). The principles of XPS will be explained, and topics will include instrumentation, qualitative and quantitative analysis, chemical effects, artifacts and both non-destructive and destructive depth profiling. Examples of Data Processing will be given throughout the course and will illustrate results from processing with many different software programs, including PHI Multipak, Service Physics ESCA 2007, QUASES Tougaard, and CasaXPS. (This 3 day course is not designed to teach users how to use these software programs, but to illustrate their applications to various aspects of processing XPS/ESCA data.) A comprehensive set of notes on XPS/ESCA will be provided for each course participant.

The last 2 days, 28 February - 1 March, will be hands-on training with CasaXPS for the processing of XPS/ESCA data (see the course description http://www.surfaceanalysis.org/casa.html). A complete 30-day trial copy of CasaXPS and appropriate XPS/ESCA data will be provided to attendees so they can follow the examples on their own laptops. Electronic copies of “An Introduction to XPS and AES” by Neal Fairley, and a user manual will be provided as well. Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops to the course. The software runs in a Microsoft Windows™ environment.

Registration fees include tuition, notes or manuals as mentioned above, lunch, coffee breaks and snacks. There are special room rates for attendees of $155.00 (plus 12% tax). The rooms have full kitchens, a sitting area, and private balconies. The venue has a heated pool, a sandy area, a deck area, a fishing pier, and an outdoor fitness center. The hotel offers free transportation from and to Tampa International Airport (TPA), free internet for guests, and free self-parking. Telephone the hotel at 813-342-3100 and mention the group rate for “Surface Analysis” to receive this special room rate. There are a limited number of rooms at these rates, and reservations must be made before 25 January 2019 as any unused rooms will be released to the hotel on this date. This rate is also available up to three days before and/or after the courses with advanced reservations.
