You don't say whether the codes you are keying in are visible to
you on the screen as you type them or whether they are obscured by
place-holders, such as *. If you cannot see the actual characters
on the screen as you type them then one of the possible
explanations for what you describe is that the layout of your
physical keyboard and the keyboard layout in the operating system
on the new PC do not match, resulting in you not entering the
correct characters. You can easily test this by keying the same
codes in to a text editor and seeing whether they are what you
think you are typing.
