During this pandemic, I have been reflecting on how wonderful it is to have a network of family and friends to rely on for support. I know that many of our patrons are fortunate to have devoted spouses, children or friends who help them download or order books and write emails to me with questions and concerns. Without this assistance, some patrons might have stopped reading a long time ago or might not have even started receiving our free library services in the first place.

In this issue of Overseas Outlook, I would like to share a story about a partnership between one of our longtime patrons and a volunteer who helped him for the last fifteen years of his life. I hope their story warms your heart as much as it did mine.

NLS patron Clem Blakeslee was born in Kansas in the 1930s. He was blind from birth and attended the Kansas School for the Blind until he was 16 years old. In his junior year, he transferred to a local high school, where he believed he could get a more rigorous education that would better prepare him for college and a professional career. He flourished in his new environment: he was inducted into the National Honor Society and his new schoolmates elected him president of their graduating class.

After graduating, Clem taught multiple academic disciplines at several universities in the United States and Canada, including the University of Calgary, where he was a professor of sociology. It was in Calgary that Clem met his future wife, Mary, a social worker who was intelligent, spirited, courageous and as capable as Clem of continually learning, challenging and cultivating herself. After Clem and Mary were married, they moved to Texas, where Mary took a job as a public relations director, which required her to become a versatile writer. After the couple returned to Calgary, Mary enjoyed a second career as a successful author of more than 20 books, most of them written for children.

Dave became interested in CNIB because both his dad and aunt suffered from macular degeneration, and his dad became legally blind in his late 80s. Dave started assisting Clem once a week, and over time they became friends. Their complementary personalities and knowledge made them a good fit, and their shared interests in urban renewal, social justice, human rights and belief in the power of the mind fueled their many conversations.

Among many other subjects, Clem had more than 400 books each on business and economics; modern medicine and human biology; organizational culture, leadership and personal growth; ethnic and cultural histories for different regions of the world; and the history of philosophy and science.

When Clem recently moved into a senior living facility, he no longer had room for his beloved books. With help from his friends, he set up a project to find good homes for the contents of his entire library. In addition, he designed and planned workshops through an older adult learning and service organization in Calgary to promote awareness and interest in those subjects, to which his library readily offered the best resources.
