Boy you have some gall! And what makes you think that the MD was approaching the
incompetence levels just because he choose to re-use his own tune? There could
be many reasons why an MD chooses to re-use one of his own tunes, lack of time
to compose/record a new tune being just one legitimate reason or the producer
insisting that a hit tune of a previous movie be re-used in his new movie, if
both the producer and MD are the same pair. Roshan was hardly incompetent when
he chose to reuse his "Tera dil kahan hai" as "Rahen na rahen hum".
Serious effort for what? Just so that every time you hear a song you can run to
your database to check up and see if it has an original? Or just so that anytime
someone mentions a song you can promptly dismiss off that tune as having been
plagiarised and show off your knowledge? Is this just an academic exercise or is
there some purpose behind this? While your efforts at digging out the originals
might be worth some praise, so far your classifications seem less of matter and
more of (f)art.

Not really. Even in England and the US, in the 50's, music of artistes from one
country was not readily available across the Atlantic in the other. Which is why
I am a little skeptical to believe that Western Music was as easily available in
India. When it was, yes the MD's might have copied the tunes, but I think the
instances of MD's copying tunes in the 40's-60's period is definitely going to
be fewer than in the 70's-90's period.
Then as I said earlier, sarcastically at that time but seriously now, why don't
you call even Tansen's and Thyagaraaja's works as copied. There are only 12
notes, so ultimate credit should go to the person who invented/devised these 12
notes, so what if only a few centuries separate the creator of these notes from
Tansen. Find out the guy who said that "Sa" has to be there in every raga/tune
and give him the credit.

You may not wish to do so if you don't want to, but todate, you have not
identified yourself by name, etc., whereas almost everyone else who has been
responding to your posts has been kind enough to identify themselves. Would you care to do so?Happy listenings.Satish Kalra
There are two versions of his song - "sapt suran teen graam" - one by
Saigal and the other by Manna De (from Tansen, 1943 & Sangeet Samrat
Tansen, 1963?) respectively.
The Saigal version gives the complete mnemonic
saa - sur SAAdho man
re - apane RAb ko chain
ga.ndhaar - taju GUmaan
madhyam - Moksha paavo
pancham - PArameshvar
dhaivat - DHAro dhyaan
nii - NIt din prabhuu charaN shiital aavo
much more meaningful, methinks, than the inane Do-Re-Mi or saare ke
saare. So do we now go about nailing Oscar Hammerstein for stealing a 400 year
old idea?Vijay
This discussion on plagiarism can go on and on until the cows come home ! It
has been a favourite topic before but I am afraid nothing can be done to
avoid this. One might get some pleasure in abusing people like Anu Malik etc
but once again, they don't give a monkey's.
What I think we should do (and that may be more constructive) is do launch a
massive complaint against HMV for releasing the same songs from many Hindi
Films year after year over and over again. I wonder if anyone has compiled
some list which shows how many songs have been released again and again in
various cassettes and CDs. Now they have started their 'Golden Collection'
of the same old songs. This time they claim that they have 'digitally
cleaned' the songs, but if you listen to them they sound awful. They have
literally cleaned the music ! Obviously they did it without much expertise
and effort. Just to make quick bucks.
All in all I think HMV is guilty of cheating thousands of music lovers all
over the world (like you and I).
How about a massive complaint letter to our dearest Sanjeev Kohli at
HMV,Bombay who master minds the repetitive release of hundreds of cassettes
and CDs every few weeks ?
Any takers ? Any comments ?Gautam

OK..how and where do you see a similarity in the tune between the S.Of Music
song and the Parichay song? They have been sung in the same style but tune
similarity is very faint if at all.Ketan
-> I agree. The film Parichay is loosely based on the movie 'Sound of Music'. The style of the song is the same when they explain each note. But the tune is not at all similar. Are you including different-tune but same theme copying in plagiarism? You need a new category for this VRK :)

Here are a couple more...Tarzan, my Tarzan... (from the hindi version of "Tarzan", sung by Alisha
IIRC, MD?) lifted from "99 Luftballoons" or "99 Red Balloons" by Nena. The mukhda of "Aaja Sanam..." from "Chori Chori" (sic), MD=SJ, is very
similar to a western classical (actually sounds more like Italian/French
folk to me) tune they often play during the NBA games. Anyone know the
name of the original composition?Regards
Rajneesh.

I had given this querry to Mr. Ashok, many months ago. Earlier,
another person had given the name of the film as: LORI and
someone else had mentioned the film as: MEHBOOBAround 1968, a friend of mine in Bombay, had recorded this Plus
Qaidi's song (Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat) on a reel tape. I
have the complete wordings and also the recording on tape /
Noor Jehan / Meri Pasand / Tape # 2 / EMI Pakistan.I was just curious to find the name of the film, so that I
could comminicate with friends, who may be unaware of this
excellent gazal.Thanks for the info.
