Is it possible to add custom properties to a folder?
I'm working with certain programs that save multiple documents, images, media etc in 1 folder. So instead of adding custom properties to every single file, i would like to add custom properties to the folder itself.

I answer, but I am just discovering the software

Of course a folder have properties (wrench tool)

But the way the files are inserted in the folder make them obtain the properties or no. If I understand well if the folder is in its natural mode , with sub folders, adding a file in a subfolder will not give the properties, while if the folder is in the "flat" presentation (all files of all subdirectories at the screen) the propertioes are gained.

Or may be it is only when one copy a file from a Metadrive folder to another, that this process take place

ANyway I could declare a sort of "root" directory with the "choices" tags that I wanted for all the files in the subfolders, , I did the organisation in Google drive, and gives the root folder properties in Metadrive

ALl the files have the same properties now

I can add properties probably to any of those subfolders, or to any file, hierarchically.

I may better understnd that point of the "link" between a folder and its files that is lost in case of copy and not recreated from the hierarchy in the new folder

That mean to me that files manipulations need to be done into Drive to be clear

Best regards

Hope that helps

Thanks for the explanation! I'll have to start playing around a bit to fully understand, but this helps. I overlooked the 'flat' presentation button ;)

Hi Michelle and thanks for your response Isaac,

If you create some custom properties in a folder, you will be able to edit this Metadata in every file inside the folder hierarchy, that means all documents inside the folder and its subfolders. But you only will be able to see or edit these properties if you open the folder where you created the properties. If you open a subfolder you will not see any property.

As Isaac says, you can use "no folders" button to see all the documents in a flat structure and avoid folder navigation.

Hello all

Michelle, I just created a new "chioice" tag in the upper directory. The new tag appeared immediately in all files hierarchically (without need to do that in "flat" presentation)

Still I just had an idea,

If the "choices" tags could use a "default tag" property, we could use that property to automatically give a default tage to all files in a directory.. That mean there may be sub folders if we want to do that by file type (and do not solve the issue as this cannot be done temporarly, just to add the tages as the files will loose them if moved - if I understand correcttly)

My main question is that in the end the "master" directory for me is local, it is the one that starts a new sync if I make modifications, not the one on line (the directory on line do not creat new directories locally, for instance, while the opposite is true, and I prefer that way at the moment.

This is possibly something I did parameter in Drive, I do not recall and will ask. Then it is not what may be done for collaborative work, or the validated data on line should be downloaded at the end of the job , to the original responsible.

This is not yet my problem anyway.

Best regards

PS I try to have all folders "clean" but their subfolder, the data is at the lowest hyerarchy range, I do that hoping to have a faster loading on the screen, but also a good manner I think, unclassed data goes to a temporary folder.

best regards

Isaac

Hi there, I resume this old matter as it doesn't seem I can add metadata to a sub-folder.

I'd like to add metadata to a sub-folder as I add them to a normal file.

Is there a way to do it?

Thanks
Giorgio

Hello Giorgio,

Let's clarify the question, would you like to assign some values to a subfolder and then automatically assign these values to all the children in the subfolder or edit metadata in subfolders as you can do it in files?
  • If you want to assign the same value to all the children in a subfolder, you can use edit in datasheet.
  • If you want to edit metadata in subfolders, it's something that is in our roadmap with no commitment.
Waiting for your answer!
