The U.S. House of Representatives just passed a comprehensive sanctions bill to squeeze Iran’s oil exports to a trickle, stiffening the strongest set of sanctions to isolate any country in the world during peacetime. This bill—passed by an overwhelming bipartisan majority—is a crucial sign of America’s steadfast commitment to preventing a nuclear-capable Iran.

And once again, your individual investment in AIPAC helped make this happen. Through countless meetings with members of Congress that started at this past AIPAC Policy Conference, we were able to urge our elected officials to take this critical stand and refocus American attention on the danger posed by a nuclear Iran.

As Iran continues building its nuclear program, it is essential for Congress to increase the pressure on the Islamic Republic. Because of your investment, we are able to ensure that this is happening.

This critical piece of legislation achieves the following:

  • Requires countries to reduce the imports of Iranian crude oil by a combined 1 million barrels per day.
  • Ends exemptions to countries that continue to import Iranian oil, such as China, Japan, Turkey and South Korea.
  • Grants specific authorization to the president to bar any companies from doing business in America if they carry out virtually any significant commercial trade with Tehran.
  • Targets and depletes Iran’s foreign currency reserves.
  • Holds responsible the supreme leader, president, and other senior government officials of Iran for serious human rights abuses, and calls on the U.S. president to sanction these individuals.

Please thank your members of Congress for voting for this important bill.
