Iran Sanctions Legislation Signed into Law

President Obama on Thursday signed into law the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act (CISADA). CISADA is the toughest sanctions ever imposed on the Islamic Republic. Last week, in overwhelming votes, the Senate (99-0) and the House (408-8-1) passed the legislation, which will limit Iran's ability to import refined petroleum and impede its participation in the international banking system. If implemented, CISADA could have a dramatic effect on Iran's business operations and severely limit the funding of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Watch the video of the CISADA signing ceremony and read a transcript of the president's speech.

Congress to Obama: Stand with Israel at U.N.
A letter spearheaded by Reps. Ted Poe (R-TX) and Gary Peters (D-MI) was sent to President Obama on Tuesday calling on him to back Israel's right to self-defense and veto any biased U.N. Security Council resolution against Israel. The letter was signed by 338 representatives—78 percent of the House. "We believe that it is in our national security interest to unequivocally reiterate that the United States stands behind our longtime friend and ally," the letter reads. "We urge you to remain steadfast in the defense of Israel in the face of the international community's rush to unfairly judge and condemn Israel." A similar Senate letter spearheaded by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)—signed by 87 senators—was sent to the president last week. The letters come as Israel is under international scrutiny for defending its soldiers and citizens by enforcing the blockade on the Gaza Strip, which is run by the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hamas.
