Dear Dr. Halim,
With regards to our assignment, we would like to ask a few questions. Our topic is ‘OUTSOURCING: DOES IT REALLY MATTER IN THE NEW EMERGING MARKET?. What we would like to ask is the context of ‘outsourcing’ in our topic and it can be seen as follows:
1. Outsourcing of Supply Chains – example would be the design of products e.g. automotive parts to be more modular in characteristics. This will mean more parts will be sub-assembled at the vendor and supplied to the OEM.
2. Procurement sourcing activities – from single sourcing to double or triple sourcing e.g. from one vendor supplying a part to more than one vendor supplying the same part.
3. Logistics outsourcing – the additional usage of third party logistics (3PL) to consolidate the material/parts supply to an OEM.
4. Global outsourcing – off shoring, on shoring etc.
From the above, our question is that should our topic cover all of the above and more or we can choose to be specific and more focused?
We would really appreciate your guidance.
Best Regards

Our subject matter is ‘Outsourcing: Does it really matter in the new emerging market? Our outline will begin by providing a clear definition of ‘outsourcing’ from several viewpoints and its relative comparison to ‘off-shoring’ and ‘offshore outsourcing’. Next we will proceed to elaborate the fabrics of outsourcing and how it contributes to effective sourcing decisions of a firm with the main objective of increasing the supply chain surplus. Then we will try to define the meaning and context of ‘new emerging market’ and seek to understand its meaning and the many arguments to its definition such as the fine line between rapidly developing countries, newly industrialized countries, big emerging markets etc.
Finally, we will try to tie-up these two definitions i.e. outsourcing and emerging markets to the main question and answer the question posed by giving clear reasoning, citations, case studies, risks involved, the issues and challenges currently faced together with our own recommendations and conclusion. Looking back at the topic question, there was an initial argument that the meaning of the question could seem a little ambiguous and having double meaning. It could mean that the outsourcing activity is done in the emerging market and the other meaning could be that the outsourcing activity is done by the emerging market. In our case, we opt to take the latter meaning i.e. consideration of outsourcing activities to be carried out by the emerging market.
We hope that the outline above is sufficient for you to comment and give guidance for us to continue our work.
Best Regards.
P.S. We were a bit slow to reply due to one of our member just came back from outstation.
