Auto Sorter & Edit Bookmark Dialog

First of all, thanks for writing SuperSorter. So far, it works well for me.

There is one quirk that I find very irritating. When bookmarking a page, click Advanced, and have the list of folders to select, I'm usually scrolling the list or in the middle of creating/naming a new folder. Frequently, the list will update or my new folder edit will vanish. I assume that auto sort is kicking in during this time.

If there is a way to detect that the Edit Bookmark dialog is open, please suspend Auto Sort until the dialog is closed.

Please let us know if you are able to find a way to pause Auto Sort while bookmarks are being edited. It would auto sort while I was using Bookmark Manager to organize bookmarks into various folders. And at least twice, the bookmark or folder I was moving vanished.

It seems as though SuperSorter is not sorting individual bookmarks, but rather sorting the JSON file and writing all bookmarks back out at once.

So I've turned off Auto Sort for now. Or, at least I think I did. (And so does the SuperSorter settings page.) But it continued to auto sort after I turned off the option. I'm hoping that won't continue after I restart the browser. If so, I'll uninstall SuperSorter.

Hi Jon,

You asked for SuperSorter's automatic sorting to be suppressed when you are working in the Bookmark Manager. I have added this feature in version 0.5.3, which should come out within the next few days.

If the Bookmark Manager tab is active (that is, if it's in the foreground) then neither the manual nor the automatic sort will start. This is a configurable setting that can be turned off via the Options page. Note that it only prevents a sort from starting if the Bookmark Manager is open; if you open the Bookmark Manager while a sort is already underway, SuperSorter will continue and complete that sort, and items will still move around inside the Bookmark Manager.

Incidentally, the slightly odd behaviour you noted happens because when other tools make a change to Chrome's bookmark tree, the Bookmark Manager takes a bit of time to catch up with the changes. So SuperSorter can finish sorting and you may not see the results in the Bookmark Manager until a few moments later. As far as I can see, there's nothing an extension developer can do to change this behaviour. I think this new feature will reduce confusion, so thanks again for the suggestion.
