SuperSorter no longer functions at all for me

to SuperSorter Chrome extension
I had much success with SuperSorter a few months back when I first
tried the extension. Everything worked as advertised. This was one of
my favorite extensions. Thanks for providing something that Google
should have included in the first place.

However, *none* of the features work for me any longer. I can click
the program icon, it says "Done" ... and absolutely nothing has
changed in the bookmarks. (If I set it to "Auto" it likewise does
nothing.)

I'm running this version of Chrome on Linux and Gnome 3 (this is
Chrome's about:version information):

Chromium 11.0.696.71 (Developer Build 86024) Ubuntu 11.04
WebKit 534.24 (trunk@80534)
V8 3.1.8.16
User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686) AppleWebKit/534.24 (KHTML,
like Gecko) Ubuntu/11.04 Chromium/11.0.696.71 Chrome/11.0.696.71
Safari/534.24
Command Line /usr/lib/chromium-browser/chromium-browser --flag-
switches-begin --flag-switches-end

I've tried turning off all other extensions. But, still, no sorting
takes place.
I've tried clearing all browsing data first. No sorting.
I've tried clearing all browsing data and restarting Chrome. No
sorting.
I close Chrome and leave it overnight. When I start it up, no sorting.
(Contraindicating the "bookmark sorting quota" theory.)

I have Google Sync activated, but no other instances of Chrome open
elsewhere.

Any idea what's going on? What further information can I give you?

Wow, that is very strange. Thanks for all the detail in your report. I haven't been able yet to replicate the failure you describe, which does indeed sound different from the more common quota problem. I will have to try setting up a VM with a setup like yours.

A few random questions that might help me get to the bottom of it:

Do you have an unusually large collection of bookmarks? Do you have bookmarks that use non-Roman alphabets? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling SuperSorter?

Thanks again for your help in reporting this.

If anyone else out there is experiencing similar problems I'd be interestrd to hear from you.

I have a fair number of bookmarks, but not an unusually large number -- at least, not for me. 8-)

Let's see ... about 250 bookmarks in about 20 folders, nested as much as four deep (counting the top-level Bookmarks Bar folder).

All the bookmarks are in whatever standard encoding that Gnome uses -- no non-Roman alphabets.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled (and, at other times, disabled and reenabled) SuperSorter repeatedly -- no change.

What else can I think of? Along with Google Sync, I've used Xmarks to synchronize my bookmarks in the past. It wouldn't be synchronizing the bookmarks with extra information that would accidentally block your program would it? Seems unlikely.

I've also tried this with Chrome as my default browser and not my default browser. Using GTK or Classic themes, system title bar and borders vs. compact borders makes no difference. Basically, I've played with all the Chrome options to see if anything (very unexpectedly) had an effect. Not surprisingly, they had no effect.

OK, that is really puzzling. I have thousands of bookmarks and deeper nesting and cannot replicate the issue yet. I don't think XMarks would prevent sorting.

Have you tried reinstalling Chrome in case something has gone wrong with it? I understand if you're reluctant to do that and I'll still investigate.

Thanks,
Richard.

SuperSorter worked for me, then stopped. I later reinstalled my whole OS and updated it and Chrome to the newest version. So, I guess the answer is yes, Chrome has been reinstalled since things went bad.

Is there some log information somewhere that would be useful to you? I'm somewhat familiar with Developer Mode in Chrome, and I have the (probably not very useful in this case) Web Developer tool set installed as well.

BTW, SuperSaver on Chrome 12.0.742.122 (Build 91910) on my Mac OS X Lion machine works perfectly.

Richard, good news: SuperSavor is now working perfectly for me on Chrome 11.0.696.71 (86024) Ubuntu 11.04. Don't know if it was something you did, something Google did, or something I did locally on my machine (I pretty much just apply updates as they arrive -- I haven't been deep hacking Chrome settings or anything), but the issue seems to be resolved currently. Thanks for looking into this.

I have reproduced this issue. Perhaps Google have changed something in Chrome that breaks it. I will have to investigate. Thanks for the reports.

Richard.

Hmm - and now it is working for me again, just a couple of minutes later. This is puzzling. (I'm using Chrome 21.0.1180.75 m on Windows 7 64-bit.)

One thing I do notice is that Chrome does not always update the bookmark manager when the bookmarks have been moved. So if I'm looking at the bookmark manager screen when I click the SuperSorter button, I sometimes don't see anything move, but then if I look at my dropdown "other bookmarks" menu (on the bookmarks bar) I see that the bookmarks have in fact been sorted. I have to manually refresh the bookmark manager to see the change there.

I'll keep an eye on it and see if I can break it again. I'd like to be able to figure out what's going on here.

Best,
Richard.

Do you mean that when you are in the bookmark manager, right-clicking a bookmark and doing "Delete" doesn't work? If so there may be something else wrong that is causing SuperSorter to have a problem.

Thanks,
Richard.

I have the same experience as Jim. My Chromium configuration is:
28.0.1500.71 (Developer Build 28.0.1500.71-0ubuntu1.13.04.1Built on Ubuntu 13.04, running on LinuxMint 15

I have just installed this and it did not seem to do anything.

I removed the "Ignore Bookmarks Bar" option so that the only option I had was "Put folders before bookmarks", it then worked OK after clicking the button.

I switched on the auto but that only seemed to work when I clicked the button, but perhaps I need to wait for Chrome to catch up.

Uncecking the "Ignore Bookmarks Bar" option was all that I required to get Super Sorter super sorting again, thanks Dan Dunay, and tripple thanks Super Sorter, worth gold on the bookmarks bar!
