I am a minor user, I just use Supercard for Dungeons and Dragons (happy to share with any one else, the collection is extensive).

I stopped at 4.5. Is it appropriate to upgrade from the downloads?
I don't want to assume and do something wrong.

I am still running on Mojave as I have two systems so I will have no problems on that account.

I think 4.5 has different serial numbers, so yours will probably not work with 4.7 or 4.8, but it can't hurt to try. If the serial number you own works, then that means it's a free upgrade for you.

I use all editions in my game including Pathfinder, Arduin and more.  Forty-six years running the same multiverse, online and table top group.
