Apologies for using SM as to do a quick poll, but I need some very
quick feedback about something.

Has you ever heard of "The Innovation Machine" and where?

Nope, in the absence of a Google search...what is it?

Em I've heard talk of innovation machines with certain individuals. Other than business conversations, I've not heard anything outside of that.

Found it, it was talked about in "In Conversation With... Peter

did not go, but have invite email with some broad details is you want
it.

Sorry, I thought you wanted the information, but I guess you really
are just after if people know about it.

If I am corrected I suspect that only one or two people will have head
about it here as it is not overly relevant to most of us. Do we get to
know why you ask?

Hi Jon,

Yes I've heard of the innovation machine.
I think It was on some open university stuff.

Basically it's a system that Dyson has adopted now
to come up with new ideas.

Very simply it's a creative think tank.

Something which large global brands would approach to come up
with ideas for them.

I come up with ideas constantly, so I did once consider joining a think tank.
So I seriously looked into how they work about possibly setting up one as well.

It's a very japanese way of working.  For example, Sony would create a best
selling product, and just make it smaller.

By making it smaller, they are *Forced* to start again, and rebuilt it.

The very act of making something smaller you are *Forced* to innovate.
Which is why sony will release the same product but smaller, lighter, faster, better.
(recently ps3 lite)

It's not because really the consumer wants it smaller, it's becasue they are forced
to innovate and come up with new technologies, and it's those technologies
create new products.  They do it to compete and survive.

That's the very essence of the "innovation machine" - it's a process that naturally
creates new ideas by doing other things.

The Japanese also believe smaller things are closer to god, which is why
they strive for smallness, and think the Mini Car is very cool and way
ahead of it's time which it was.

Not many people get this outside of Japan, except people like Dyson, which
the japanese got instantly.

You'll never see a western company completely re-creating  a product, that
only appears smaller. Which is why all the best electrical gadgets are from the east.

cheers, haniff  - ibod search engine.

Hi Haniff,

Not sure that Jonathan Ive (and the rest of Apple), among others, would agree with that particular sweeping statement...

Hi Andi,

for sure!

If you look at the top 50 innovative companies in the world,
apple have been no1 for a while.

My point was more really that eastern thinking has innovation built in,
which is why they understood what Dyson was trying to do and no
other company in the west did.

It's an interesting point that apple generally make products for one person - steve jobs!
When Steve left (well pushed out of apple)  apple took a serious nose dive on all fronts and all
the innovation was created at NextStep, which he brought back into apple in the form
of osx.

Therefore the ingrained culture of innovation wasn't really there, like it is
in the east.

So apple occupy a very special place indeed in all this.

er, Steve Jobs isn't responsible for design at Apple .. Jonathan Ive is...(and a metric assload of other people far more qualified for the job than he is).

Happily, he was educated at Newcastle Polytechnic :)

You're definitely right in some respects but you can't make sweeping generalisations when talking about global industries and cultures!

But if S. Jobs doesn't like the product it doesn't get out of the door.  He is the gate-keeper and represents the customers from Apple's perspectives.  I couldn't design a car but I know a good one; I can't paint but I can appreciate good paintings; Steve J knows a good product for his market when he sees one and I guess spots the bad ones too.

Hey, I'm still the pround owner of the original
"Bondi blue" iMac! Only it has a orange keyboard/mouse.

I wonder if I can upgrade it with a mini-mac internals or something.

Also mac classic, three broken powerbooks and a newton pda (which I still use for passwords).

I must getting old, I really do like playing with these old computers!

Still not been able to find a Next Step machine yet, I think they just
looked so cool as well... I wonder who designed them?

No i've not heard of it, or can't remember why if i have.

It sounds familiar, but it is the kind of generic term/name that is
always to sound familiar whether you've heard of it or not.

Hi Ian,

wow, so pleased someone else actually knows what they are,
I thought for a moment I was living in a parallel universe or switched to one
where they don't exist or something!

I have two actually,  the newer smaller, and original model.

The hand recognition is really quite good..

I mean who'd even think these heavy bricks were state of the art PDAs now?
...and even think anything sensitive is stored on them....

Besides, the "what's that then?" conversation in meetings is always
really quite amusing.  It's worth having one for that amusement alone...

Mind you I got a parcel the other day, and the guy had a massive PDA,
I think it was some ancient PSION...Signing it really sucked...

Didn't realise they were still active in this market, I've not used my Psion 5 in ages...

cheers H
