A VSDX file is a drawing created by Microsoft Visio, an application for creating drawings and technical illustrations. It stores shapes, lines, text, and other objects arranged together on a free-form canvas. VSDX files are typically used for saving flowcharts, process diagrams, organizational charts, and other types of drawings.

Microsoft introduced the VSDX format with the release of Visio 2013. It replaced the older .VSD binary format and .VDX XML format used by Visio 2010 and earlier. Visio 2013 and later versions still support VSD and VDX files.

The VSDX format uses Open Packaging Conventions (OPC), which is based on XML and uses a .ZIP container to package all the drawing contents. VSDX files can be classified as "archives" or "packages." They contain "document" parts, which include the content and metadata of the VSDX file, and "relationship" parts, which include images and text files.

Microsoft Visio is primarily used to create diagrams and store them in the VSDX file. Some other files used by Visio include the .VSDM file to store macro-enabled drawings, .VSTX files to store templates, .VSTM files to store macro-enabled templates, .VSSX files to store stencils, and .VSSM files to store macro-enabled stencils.

You can open, edit, save, and convert VSDX files with Microsoft Visio (Windows). You can also open VSDX files with Draw, which is included in the free LibreOffice suite (multiplatform), CS Odessa ConceptDraw PRO (multiplatform), Nektony VSD Viewer (macOS, Android, iOS), and the Google Chrome web browser (with the Free Visio Viewer extension installed).

If you do not have a program that supports the VSDX format you can still view the contents of a VSDX file by renaming the .vsdx extension to .zip and unzipping the file with Microsoft Windows Explorer (bundled with Windows) or Apple Archive Utility (bundled with macOS). Keep in mind that viewing the contents of a VSDX file using this method is not the same as viewing a VSDX file with an application that supports the format.

The FileInfo.com team has independently researched the Microsoft Visio Drawing file format and Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS apps listed on this page. Our goal is 100% accuracy and we only publish information about file types that we have verified.

Crossover handles Visio very well, unlike the many issues you may find with Wine. Although Crossover is a commercial product and Visio as well, as far as alternative Visio like applications there are a few.

I installed Visio in Ubuntu, but first I installed Wine. It's working fine (there are some issues!). I don't know if there is another way to open that kind of files. I tried with OpenOffice.org Drawing but nothing happen.

If you have access to Visio 2003 or higher, you could try to convert it to .SVG That format is easily readable by both Dia and Inkscape. If not, you're in a world of pain because raw Visio is not easily convertible.

This wikiHow teaches you how to open and view the contents of a VSDX (Visio) document, using a computer. VSDX files are the native format to Microsoft's premium Visio app, and usually contain drawings, technical illustrations or flowcharts. You can open them in an internet browser or use a free desktop app.

A VSDX file is a file format used by Microsoft Visio, a program designed for creating diagrams and flowcharts. It is the default format for saving files in Visio 2013 and later versions. VSDX files are based on the Open Packaging Conventions, which is a standard ZIP archive containing XML content. This format enables seamless integration with other Microsoft Office applications.

A Visio Viewer is necessary for opening VSDX files, as it allows users to view, print, and share Visio drawings and diagrams without having to install the Visio application. It provides a simple way for stakeholders without Visio to access and review diagrams, making it easy to collaborate and communicate Visio content with colleagues and partners.

The necessity of using a third-party VSDX viewer arose due to the limitations of standard software, leading to the development of specialized tools, like a Third-Party VSDX Viewer, to cater to specific user needs.

Once, a friend of mine needed to convert several VSDX files into a different format for a team project. They carefully researched and chose a reliable file conversion tool, ensuring a smooth and secure conversion process.

One of my customers wants to be able to view local .vsdx files in Edge as they did in IE before. Edge does start in IE mode, and the file is no longer being blocked. However the file opens as a blanc tab.

Hi, we are losing our desktop Visio in a few days, which I just found out about, and are being told to use the Online / Web Version going forward. However, when I try to edit one of my VSDX files (that was created in the desktop app) in the Web App, I'm getting an error due to 'The file contains Visio Desktop solutions Number Shapes' even though my files are not using that function, in fact, I've never used that function. When I click on the link in the error message it just brings me to the standard 'what's supported / what's not' page which doesn't provide any details on how to fix this specific issue. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance for your help!

I am not using the Number Shapes function, so not sure why I'm getting that error. I spent a few hours messing around with different files on Sat and couldn't figure it out. Some of my files are opening ok, some are not. I've tried taking out background sheets, taking out headers / footers (they don't seem to carry over to online version anyways), deleting shapes in the Document Stencil to decrease file size, removing jpgs, removing off-page refs (I don't use the hyperlink option with these though), removing custom colors, etc. But, it appears the error isn't stemming from the actual shapes on my pages, but some kind of file setting? It seems I can't upload an actual Visio file for you to take a look. For now, I'm instructing people to copy / paste their flows into a new Visio chart, which seems to work, but obviously isn't an ideal option.

After more research, I think I've found the reason why we're getting this error, even though we're NOT using the Number Shapes function. I likely just did a save-as of my old .vsd flows into the .vsdx version when that new version was available years ago. I saw on one page that files that were originally .vsd files + converted to .vsdx files cannot be edited in the online Visio version. Good to know, I guess. Doesn't change the fact that a lot of us will be unable to edit our flows going forward unless we manually copy / paste each page of our flows into a new blank .vsdx file.Would've been nice if the error stated this as the reason vs. the 'Number Shapes' issue that actually isn't the root cause.

The first thing you need to do to open Visio files via Visio viewer is to open an account for the Microsoft 365 software so that you can use Microsoft Visio after launching it. The important thing you need to remember is that when you open a drawing file using a Visio Viewer, the drawing opens in a browser window. If more pages are in the file, more tabs will be opening in the browser seen at the bottom of the viewer.

If you want to look at a particular part of your diagram, you can zoom in on that specific part by pressing Control and Shift together. Drag the rectangle around the area you want to magnify to zoom in.

Sometimes you might want to center the page while using it in the browser. If you ever want to do that, all you have to do is right-click on the decided drawing, then you will have to press the zoom option, and then click on the whole page, and this is how you will be able to center the page with your drawing in it.

If multiple pages have opened in different browser tabs, you will have to know how to go to a particular page of your file when you are using Visio Viewer to open Visio files. Click the page you want to go to, find it at the bottom of the drawing window, and visit a specific page of your file.

Visio, a popular software program of Microsoft, enables users to create intricate diagrams in the formats VSD and VSDX. These files are widely used for visual representations of processes, workflows, and flowcharts. Although Visio is a powerful tool, one might need to open VSD files without Visio in some cases. For example, Visio is not avaible for the MacOS system.

This is when platforms such as EdrawMax comes in. They allow users to access and modify diagrams without Visio. This option proves invaluable for those seeking quick and convenient access to their Visio files.

EdrawMax is an excellent choice for editing VSD files. It has a user-friendly interface, extensive features, and seamless compatibility. You can also benefit from its diverse library of templates and powerful diagramming tools.

Download and install EdrawMax on your computer. Log in with your registered email address. Launch the app and navigate to the Import section on the left toolbar. Click the Import Visio button to get started.

After importing the VSDX file into EdrawMax, unleash your creativity by making the desired changes. Customize content, switch themes, update fonts, and explore the template community. Enhance the imported VSDX file with exciting options available in-app.

Tailor your Visio-imported files by adding various components to suit your needs. For instance, if you're designing a software competition analysis, incorporate components like connectors, diagrams, and more. Add symbols and other elements to your project as needed.
