Although I do not live in Mississippi, I have been a rider on the Sunset Limited out west. For the last three years or more, I've been unable to use America's only transcontinental passenger train to access the Gulf Coast and Florida. For no apparent reason, Amtrak has refused to restore the eastern third of this interstate train, despite the CSX getting the track open very quickly.
I applaud your efforts and that of the Mississippi Senate to restore the Sunset to full transcontinental service, and to push to make that train daily. In the future, perhaps more frequent New Orleans to Florida service can be started to spark the redeveopment of the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, (including transportation funds for rehab and restoration of damage Amtrak
stations along the route), but without the Sunset to and from California, the route would be at a distinct disadvantage.
Thanks again to you and your colleagues in the Mississippi Senate.
