Received on another list.... I know this is out of geography for the
lists addressed, but I think most of us have seen the trouble faced by
railway museums here in the US, and the effects of redevelopment.
In Toronto, a mostly complete roundhouse & turntable in the downtown
area was donated by CN to the city 25 years ago with the intent of it
becoming a railway museum. For whatever reason, the structure never
received the equivalent of landmark status in Canada.
It now faces having part of the structure and site being redeveloped
by a power utility company, destroying the former machine shops and
removing the space intended to be the visitor center of the museum.
With so few artifacts of the steam era left, we as a global community
can't just sit back...
