The country music world lost an absolute icon when Merle Haggard passed away on April 6, 2016, his 79th birthday. Since the early 1960s, Haggard had made a name for himself in country music, as a proponent of "outlaw country" and a supporter of the "Bakersfield sound." He released more than 100 charting country singles, earned 38 No. 1 hits and released close to 70 albums -- an immense, and legendary, catalog, to say the least.
Heavily influenced by, though not entirely an accurate depiction of, Haggard's own time in prison -- and the toll it took on his mother -- "Mama Tried" became the now-icon's biggest hit to date following its release in July of 1968. The first single from and title track of the album he released that October, "Mama Tried" spent three weeks at No. 1. It won the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999 and has been preserved in the National Recording Registry.

Simple, American, working-man pride. That's the organizing theme of Hag: The Best of Merle Haggard, which features a generous 26-song track list spanning nearly 40 years. Released in 2006, the compilation features all of Merle's biggest hits, including: "Mama Tried," "Bottle Let Me Down," "Sing Me Back Home," and "Okie from Muskogee." As an introduction to Haggard's music-- or even to the Bakersfield sound that he helped popularize-- Hag may be unparalleled.
A masterful guitarist, fiddler and songwriter as well as singer, the Country Music Hall of Famer with the firm, direct baritone recorded for more than 40 years, releasing dozens of albums and No. 1 hits.

Brooks & Dunn - Wednesday, February 27
The high-selling country duo hasn't performed a lot together over the last decade and it's been awhile since their "Boot Scootin' Boogie" heyday in the '90s, all of which makes this appearance special. Their last album of original music was the 2008 collection, Cowboy Town, but after their career of 20 No. 1 country hits, who can blame them for taking it easy. That said, this one will draw a huge amount of fans that grew up on their music, hungry to sing along to the countless hits this talented pair produced over the last 30 years.
Kings of Leon - Tuesday, March 12
There's no denying Kings of Leon's staying power. While this booking would have made a bigger splash five years ago, the Nashville band of three Followill brothers and their cousin are more than established as a rock music powerhouse, having headlined the biggest festivals this country offers. The band's humble beginnings as a Lynyrd Skynyrd-meets-The Strokes soon gave way to a much larger mainstream sound that found major radio play with singles, "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody." And if you're wondering if they are big enough to play center stage, the group opened for U2 after the release of their first album, so they know how to fill big spaces.
Brad Paisley - Saturday, March 16
Brad Paisley makes his sixth consecutive appearance and 13th overall RodeoHouston appearance, largely because he remains one of the biggest country artists in the game right now. He continues to sell out arenas wherever he plays and while the only thing new he released since his 2017 album, Love and War, is his new single "Bucked Off," he's stayed relevant through the many Nationwide insurance commercials, playing the straight-man foil to former NFL MVP Peyton Manning's comedic persona.
Country legend George Strait closed out RodeoHouston 2019 in style on Sunday, March 18, breaking the NRG Stadium attendance record he set back in 2013, attracting 80,108 country fans to see him play over two hours, and covering almost all the biggest hits of his career.
But the biggest applause came when Strait came out for an encore of four songs, the mandatory "All My Exes Live In Texas" from 1987's Ocean Front Property, "I Cross My Heart," from 1992's Pure Country, the aforementioned Petty number, and wrapping up with "Cowboys Like Us" from the 2003 album, Honkytonkville.
