Dear Friends,
The words of Kabir, a free thinking mystic and a much revered figure, have inspired many to go deep within, and thus reach the highest realms of understanding ones place in the context of society, culture, religion and most of all the human spirit.
Shri. Prahlad Singh Tipanya, a powerful singer steeped in Kabir's soulfulness, provides a powerful understanding of Kabir and his mysticism through beautiful renditions of sakhis or dohas in the unique Malwi folk style. His concerts stress the need to rise above petty divisiveness, sectarianism, empty ritualism and hypocrisy and to adopt love as the ultimate religion.
"Pancheeda", (bird / swan / soul) a three day workshop designed by Prahladji has been organised for people who desire to be a part of this mystical experience of music through words that everyone can understand and relate to.These songs are profoundly inward-looking and examine the nature of mind and body. They also point out the tangle of delusions in which we live and urge us to wake up and cultivate consciousness. The imminence of death and the transiency of all things are frequently invoked in the songs. Spiritual, social, traditional and moral values will be taken up for self - inquiry in a quest to bring a deeper engagement with these songs.
It would benefit if the participants are conversant in Hindi as English translations will be kept to its minimum.
Hindustani classical music singer, Tara Kiniji has had several experiences that have led her into a deep state of self-inquiry through theatre and music. By weaving in elements of theatre and story-telling into her conceptual directorial performances, she seeks to communicate to her audiences, the spiritualism and stillness inherent in our classical music traditions. She has also done extensive research on the music and poetry of Kabir with film- maker Shabnam Virmaniji. Taraji will join us on the second day of the workshop.
Deeply inspired by the democratic and inclusive spirit of folk music, Shabnamji Virmani, a film-maker, began to sing and play the tambura herself. She says she remains endlessly inspired by Prahladji 's wisdom and perhaps more importantly- the simplicity, generosity and humility with which he shares it. Shabnamji will share the space on the third day with Prahladji.
We look forward to have you all share this journey with us.
Warm regards,
Anju & Deepa
