I should also note that my computer has a 1200W power supply, and while I've never actually measured it using nearly that much power, to have a margin of safety, I want to assume that it could basically start drawing 10A at any time. Therefore, whatever powers it should both be rated for that level of current (ideally the full 15A that the room's circuit can provide) and also be installed in such a way that resistance heating in the power cord isn't a fire hazard.
Of course, that requires a transition from the THHN to the cordage at some point. That happens at a junction box, e.g. with a receptacle in it; the easiest way to transition from hardwiring to cordage.
A pendant is a piece of special cordage with high quality strain relief on both ends (think the Chinese finger puzzle webbing) that drops straight down from a box on the ceiling down to a junction box suspended in midair by the cordage. You then plug into that recep.
In commercial facilities they use a hard wired version that has the cord covers for both power and data the only difference is there is a box extension to connect the assembly that then goes on the floor to the wall sections.
As your desk is not a permanent fixture even though being in place more than 90 days the cord protector should be fine for your use I would suggest a heavy 12 awg cord since you plan on a heavy load, if you have a 15 amp breaker 14 awg would be ok.
The last thing I thought of was a 90 degree cord cap this replacement plug plugs in like normal but the wires exit at 90 degrees to the wall so there is no side force on the contacts. I use these in offices for this reason and when the office personal move things around these hold up to something being pushed into them breaking the receptacle and plug.
Posting this as an answer to be able to use an image, but this is what Ed Beal was referring to (concept, not the brand). Lower picture is what it looks like flipped over, showing the track that the cord snaps into.
Powerdesk has been one of my favorite file managers for years. When I switched to Win 7 Ult about a year ago I purchased a new version of PD. Unbeknown to me at time of purchase, this version 9.0.1.10 Pro insists on calling home in order to remain uncrippled!
When I dug out my original info on this purchase, there was no mention anywhere, either in emails received from Avanquest or on their websites that I visited prior to purchase, that PD must be permanently connected to the internet in order to work. Unlike previous versions of PD, I was unable to take my PC to regions that did not have internet access.
This did not become an issue until recently when I requested a way of not crippling PD when travelling and working in an internet-free zone. The support person I spoke with via email told me this was not possible.
Can you please tell me where specifically and clearly VCOM or Avanquest state, at time of purchase and before, that the Powerdesk version I purchased is/will be crippled when not permanently connected to the internet?
The main reason (I did not exhaustively test Cubic) that I uninstalled it is that FreeCommanderXE offers a dual window approach (either left to right or top to bottom) that allows you to visually see drag and drop file moves/copies. I did not see a view like that in Cubic. This feature alone would recommend FreeCommanderXE to me.
I uploaded a screenshot of the install folder with the .chm file in it. Is this the place that you were telling me?
EDIT
OK, forget the question. I looked at the file in the install folder and saw that it was 1.5Mb but the same file in the download folder was 6.94Mb. So, I deleted the 1.5 Mb and copied it again. Seems to work now. Original file was copied using drag n drop (in FC). Replacement copy was done with Ctrl/C and Ctrl/V.
Well, I owe all of you an apology. In terms of a timeline, I recently reinstalled Win 7 Ultimate 32bit from scratch (since I first experienced those Powerdesk problems) to solve an unrelated broadband disconnect problem. Then I picked up where I left off with Powerdesk and emailed Avanquest with my concerns. Like a bad scientist I did not first double-check to see if my Powerdesk issues were still present.
I decided to firewall almost all the contents of the Powerdesk folder and to my embarassment I could not reproduce the previous Powerdesk crashing fault. In spite of all I could throw at it, Powerdesk has worked flawlessly.
