GPU is the most common reason behind the display issues. Therefore, if nothing has helped so far, check the graphics card and ensure your graphics card is working fine. If the screen flickers, gets blurry when playing other games, or you see vertical and horizontal lines, the chances of GPU malfunctioning exist. Therefore, we suggest contacting a technician to get help.
Have you opened the Steam client to play a game but encountered a black screen? Is the issue only affecting one Steam tab, mainly Library, but the rest of the tabs are fine? It's one of the most frustrating issues Steam users face, whose source could be your display, Steam client, or even Windows itself.
To fix the black screen issue on Steam, you should update Steam to the latest version, close other open apps, clear browser data, delete the Steam cache folder, and revert Steam settings. Also, make sure your graphics card is fine. If you fail to diagnose the problem and the issue persists, you may need to reinstall Steam.
Does your screen flicker or appear black and blurry in other games and software too? Do you sometimes see horizontal and vertical lines on it? If so, it's likely your GPU is malfunctioning. Therefore, get it checked by a technician. Before you do that, update your graphics driver once to rule out software issues.
According to some Steam users who have experienced the black screen problem, clearing the Steam web browser data fixes this issue. Clearing the browser data clears Steam's cached files, cookies, and history, which may fix the problem. To clear Steam web browser data, follow these steps:
Many users in a Reddit thread have mentioned that force closing the Steam Client WebHelper or SteamWebHelper.exe process in Task Manager fixes the black display problem on Steam. This process is directly related to the display of Steam tabs. Any time there is a problem with this process, you will see display issues on Steam.
When you open the Steam client and see a black screen on all tabs, it feels like someone has switched off the app's lights. By applying the above fixes, you'll be able to restore the display to normal and resume playing your favorite games. If none of the fixes work, you should uninstall and reinstall Steam.
Hey, since 2 days my whole steam shop and community stuff (inventory...) is black and it wont load properly :( i already reset the settings and reinstalled steam but nothing works. hope you can help me :)
After an upgrade of 20.04 to 22.04, the steam launchpad icon opened only black windows. Starting steam from the command line still worked. The fix was toedit the /usr/share/applications/steam.desktop file:
I have a problem when launching in Steam, I get a black screen with the title music and I can move the pointer (gloved hand) but nothing else happens. I can't change to windowed mode via Alt+Enter, nor does it do anything when clicking anywhere in the screen. I tried it before installing the latest nvidia drivers and then with the latest one, but getting same error. Tried changing it to Windowed mode in Steam Advanced Launch options but nothing. Couldn't find any other config file in the steam installation folder to modify to change the screen to fulscreen or windowed.
I have the same problem with black screen when i launch the game i get the 2 logos and then a black screen with pointer (gloved hand) and the music running if i press ESC screen looks like the attached screenshot. cant seem to fix at all, also made a DxDiag.txt with the game launched
I have tried changing resolution and I am still getting just the cursor and music (my desktop stays as it is). When I hit Alt-Enter, same issues. It changes to window or full screen, but just a blank screen.
Steam has had an update recently to change the Library to the main view and the way it interacts with wine has changed. Since that update, I have the same issue as those comments above running Borderlands 2, which uses the Lutris wine steam runner.
Yes, I do have the runners in that location.
My Borderlands 2 log references the steamwebhelper.exe via S: rather than C:. It also complains it cannot find it, but it is accessible to the prefix and the location is readable/writable through winetricks -> select default prefix --> windows explorer.
Steam is not a game, but launcher and there is no config or button to change wine settings via Lutris (like similar one with Playonlinuxe, where from Playonlinux configuration wine settings could be changed). I read Lutris documentation and it says that Wine is conffigured via commands. I solved my problem, setting Wine from winecfg to WinXP solved black screen problem, but it is glitchyy
In the reddit sub you have linked it is described for a solution to enlist into the steam-beta after downgrading the package. Then you have to wait until the steam-patch is done and upgrade the freetype2-package back again afterwards.
I updated a day ago my BIOS and Windows 10, after doing that my AMD driver (crimson 16.11.5) stop working properly so i started my journey to find a solution to my problem. I had to enable UEFI compatibility in the BIOS which let me install my driver (adrenalin 18.2.1) and it worked fine with games and other applications, but my steam client shows a black screen and i don't know what to do with it (pics related 1 and 2). I changed some properties in the compatibility tab for steam.exe trying to solve this problem (pic 3), now i can see some things in the steam client (pic 4) but after a while the screen turns black again. Steam window only turned black after i installed the AMD driver, i tried with previous updates but the problem remains the same and when i switched between versions (after multiple reboots) (using amdcleanuputility to unistall each one), the steam client only worked fine when the driver was unistalled. I can use steam apps with their shortcut icons but i can't access to the store and make modifications on my acount using the steam client.
When I launch KSP it launches with a black screen and cursor. It isn't frozen, as the cursor still appears and can be moved around the screen and clicked (it turns green when clicked) although no way of knowing if clicking it is doing anything.
Things I have tried based on reading other similar problems that have not worked. Running KSP windowed, running KSP full screen, changing KSP's resolution, turning off Windows Defender, turning off Firewall (shouldn't matter, as it is excepted from the firewall anyway), launching KSP from the exe rather than through Steam, removing all mods, uninstalling and reinstalling through Steam, deleting the Kerbal Space Program folder entirely and then uninstalling and reinstalling, validating integrity of files ( but see below), deleting the exe files and forcing Steam to redownload them, updating graphic card drivers, launching 32 bit.
One interesting thing is that if I validate the files it will say everything checks out, then I will run KSP, it will be a black screen, and when I validate files again it will say 1 file failed to validate and will be reacquired. It reacquires the file, everything validates, I run KSP again, black screen, repeat. So, every time I run it 1 file appears to become no longer valid, but not sure what file or why.
I've found an entry in a steam discussion and it looks like a possible solution would be to open the Nvidia Control Panel, swtich to 'Adjust desktopsize and position' and change the aspect ratio to 'no scaling'.
I cannot confirm this because any changes in these settings doesn't break the game for me but it is worth a try
Hi, i have just got KSP and i know this is old, but i use mac and when i try to start KSP , the window is plain back, but it shows the cursor and it goes green. my system requirements match, and i haven't bought it on steam as i would like to mod it. can you help me please?

I'm having the exact same issue as the OP as well (stuck on black loading screen, with theme music, not frozen, just never progresses), but I can't figure out if it's the "array index out of range thing." I'm trying to post my KSP log and output log, but I can't figure out how (Pastebin keeps crashing, is there another way?).
Hello, I was playing with Retroarch through Steam normally, trying to put some shader presets and testing them without problems in PSX games. I stopped playing and when I came back after a while Retroarch does not work. Once I hit Play on Steam, it remains a black screen until the program closes by itself.
