Your Wedding vs. Kim Kardashian’s - Tips on How to Plan a Greener Wedding - With a cost more than 300 times that of the average wedding, it goes without saying that Kim Kardashian’s big day wasn’t exactly a “low-waste” affair. You can do better.
* Kim had 50,000 flowers decorating her affair. Consider using high quality silk flowers that can be used as gift mementos or regionally grown flowers and arrangements. Or, use potted plants from a local garden center that also work as gifts and provide memories well beyond the reception.
* Look for the recycled symbol on your announcements. Available styles range from shredded fabric scraps to having actual rose petals in the card stock. Consider establishing a wedding web site to save on paper RSVPs. See tinyurl.com/WedWebSite
* Kim’s ring was over 20 carats. Her $200,000 of gifts are now going to charity. There are now eco-oriented gift registries or you can suggest your favorite charities. See: tinyurl.com/WedRegistry1, tinyurl.com/WedRegistry2, multi-store tinyurl.com/WedRegister360
* Kim’s reception was held in a 30-foot tall tent raised over a pool by hydraulic lifts. A more modest décor could use real fruit or vegetables for table center pieces. Make sure to tell your decorator not to spray the fruits or vegetables with any preservatives that would render the center pieces non-edible.
* The food at Kim’s 400 guest reception had extravagant entrees from Wolfgang Puck and over $400,000 worth of champagne. Kim’s guests gawked at a ten tier six foot tall cake but were actually fed a different cake. A better choice would be a more modest cake that actually got eaten along with food from local or regional growers.
* Better than distributing disposable cameras is encouraging guests to use their own cameras/phones and emailing to collection service like: tinyurl.com/WedGuestsPics
