Energy Saving Tips - If you are using the “heat-dry” feature of your kitchen dishwasher you, you can save 15 – 50% of the energy used in the wash/dry cycle by simply disengaging that feature and letting your dishes air dry.
If your Cable Box or DVR is always on and does not have an Energy Star rating then it could be using several 10s of watts continuously and costing several 10s of dollars a year in electricity. Consider adding an external on/off switch or possibly just move to the internet for your video sources.
If you want to know precisely what your appliances/electronics are consuming you can check out a watt hour meter from your local library. Plug this in between the appliance and the wall plug, run it for a day, and it will give you the precise kilowatt hours (KWh) consumed. Austin residential electricity typically costs 11 cents per KWh or more depending your usage pattern.
Reducing your energy consumption not only saves you money but avoiding the energy use also avoids the air pollution associated with generating that electricity.
