City Gardening News and Capital Area Food Bank Shred Day - The City's newest program within the Parks and Recreation Department is The Sustainable Urban Agriculture and Community Garden Program, see tinyurl.com/Austin-Grows. Their quarterly newsletter available at: tinyurl.com/Austin-Grows-News covers gardening tips, current projects, and upcoming events.
Shredded paper is an excellent component to add to your compost. However, if you don’t compost or don’t have a shredder but do have a lot of special papers that need shredding, then next Saturday morning, 5/19, is annual Shred Day at Austin High School (1715 W. Cesar Chavez). Households can bring up to five boxes of paper records for shredding. The event is sponsored by the Capital Area Food Bank which will accept
monetary donations in lieu of a fee. Last year, the event shredded over 83,500 pounds of material and collected 302 pounds of food and over $7,100 for the Capital Area Food Bank, more at: tinyurl.com/Shred-2012. The shredded paper will be responsibly recycled.
