Reduce Your Cost of Trash Pickup - The newly named Austin Resource Recovery department has announced the availability of a smaller and less costly trash cart for residential trash pickup. The new 21 gallon cart can replace your existing 96, 64, or 32 gallon trash cart. Monthly charges for the four sizes are $30.95, $18.75, $13.50 and $12.75, see tinyurl.com/AustinTrashFees. The less trash you have the smaller the cart needed and the lower the cost. Call 494-9400 (English option 1, ARR opt. 5, Cart change opt. 1) to request downsizing your cart. It is free to downsize. This is an incentive to learn to compost and recycle more, to help Austin meet its “Zero Waste” goal of 90 percent diversion away from the landfill by 2040. More diversion means less trash to the landfills, less use of virgin natural resources, and less energy used for resource extraction, manufacturing and distribution of new goods from new resources. See tinyurl.com/AustinSingleStream for a description of what is and is not accepted. A growing recycling industry also brings a growing job market.
There is a new release of the St. Matthew’s Recycling and Reuse chart available at the Welcome Table in the Commons. This lists items taken at the St. Matthew’s recycling cabinet (SE corner of sanctuary basement) and on the back lists items taken by local charitable organizations.
Recycle CDs into Craft Projects - You can use old CDs or other optical discs in crafts projects like the ten suggested at tinyurl.com/CDcrafts. Ideas for what to do with their jewel cases can be found at tinyurl.com/CaseCrafts. Alternatively, you can just bring your old optical discs and any cases to the St. Matthew’s recycling cabinet.
