I’m proposing two books that are very readable. The Harari book is a bit long, but the Milanovic is concise.

The first is by a very popular author these days, Yuval  Noah Harari, Homo Deus. I am not at all familiar with his book Nexus, which has generated some activity on our site in the past couple of days. It would not be unprecedented to have two books by the same author within a single year, but if people think that one is preferable to the other then let’s have that discussion.

In Homo Deus, Harare imagines possible futures for humankind:

The second is by Branko Milanovic, Capitalism, Alone: The Future of the System that Rules the World. Milanovic describes variants of capitalism (basically Western Liberal, and Chinese) in terms of strengths and weaknesses. A book of the year selection by the Economist:

Hi, Friends.  I nominate the following two books:

1. Something Deeply Hidden: Quantum Worlds and the Emergence of Spacetime, by Sean Carroll.  This is the same Sean Carroll who interviewed William Egginton -- a video that some of us watched when we read The Rigor of Angels.  The Audio version of Carroll's book is delightful, read expertly and accessibly by the author. Available here.

2. It's Considerate to Be Literate about Religion: Poetry and Prose about Religion, Conflict, and Peace in Our World, by Steven Cunningham
Advantages of this book are that it is relatively short, the author proceeds are donated to charity, and you will be supporting a local writer, who will be happy to come to the discussion.  Available from the publisher, Amazon, or, ideally, your local brick-and-mortar retail bookseller.
:-)
