In London we would like to do  exactly the same thing. We would love to do a godless Christmas Carol Concert.

There's a very popular one in London called Nine Lessons and Carols for Godless People. In this article Robin Ince explains why atheists can celebrate Christmas. Dawkins, Gervais and a ton of other well known atheists came and did it.

We do realise that not everyone is as comfortable with the idea of singing carols as Pippa and I, but we will hopefully find a way to do it without upsetting people.

Indeed, we were thinking of somehow doing a livestreamed service which everyone in all the new ASsemblies could join in on.

What do you guys think?

Has anyone else been thinking about a holiday special? We in Melbourne have been. 

We are planning an afternoon service on the 15th December that will run a little longer and have more 'acts' than speakers e.g. poetry, performance, comedians etc. and more songs too!

Some other ideas we had were:

• 'bad jumper' attire - everyone wears their most gaudy jumpers, prizes for the best
• bring a plate - everyone contributes a dish, picnic style (it will be summer here)
• music, dancing, and (slightly alcoholic) punch afterwards
• a catchy name and tagline a la 'Festivus: for the rest of us'

What do you think? Anybody else have any plans or suggestions?

Thanks Mary. Not sure if you know Syd from CFI NY. She had this idea last year for NYC CFI and I don't recall the full story but some folks gave push back for some reason and the idea didn't go anywhere. If you are interested in pursuing, I'd contact Syd <sle...@centerforinquiry.net> to hear about her experiences and what the mixed reaction was.

 

Long story very short, I'm not much into singing so it's not for me (if I have to sing the SA is my height of comfort zone of public singing).

We did xmas caroling in washington square park to raise money for Sandy victims last year. Only a few people came and I had no voice at the time because I was getting over the flu, but it was really fun! Would love to do it again.

No matter what we do there is always one or two voices of disapproval, but like it or not a lot of us grew up singing these songs and there's no reason to stop singing them the same way we sing tons of other songs with fictional premises. I love Christmas carols, and my family is Jewish. *shrug* It's a tradition that lots of secular folks still enjoy taking part in :)
