I am trying to convert my external hard drive from fat32 to ntfs. If possible, I want to avoid losing the data or having transfer it off and back on and formatting ( I have about 400gb of data).

Only recently had I started to deal with large files and suddenly I noticed that it is not ntfs and that fat32 has a 4gb limit.

hey are you still in need of converting ntfs to fat32? if so then have a look here =21816. in particular the last post with PA link. I managed to format my hdd (lost everything obviously but this is what I expected) fortunately I have an internal hdd with original data.

Hey, I just recently switch from windows to Ubuntu Mate for my main desktop. I have around 5 hard drives formatted with ntfs where I store media files (movies, pictures etc.).
My question now however is whether I should convert these ntfs drives to ext4 or not. Now I know some of the benefits of ext4 over ntfs like larger possible files, more characters in filenames and slightly better performance in general, but will I get any tangible benefits for such media drives? Or should I just leave them as ntfs?

I think I'll stick with ntfs for now. Everything new will certainly not be ntfs anymore and I will look into possibly resurrecting my old NAS.
Seeing as this is more of an opinion based question there's no real solution; I'll flair the thread as resolved now but feel free to further discuss this topic.
Ubuntu 8.04 is very old these days, but I believe it had good support for NTFS read (using the old ntfs driver). It will correctly copy your Windows files to the ext3 external hard drive, plus or minus some attributes/permissions which have no equivalent in ext3.
Sidenote: I have found NTFS is a reasonably good filesystem for external hard drives - it works well for Windows and recent Linux computers, and it's technically superior to FAT32. The only issue is if you have to interact with Apple OSX, which still doesn't understand NTFS. (You can make OSX understand NTFS with a liberal application of FUSE and ntfs-3g, but it's not nice.)
