Actually, Xara Photo & Graphic Designer is many tools in one single interface. It brings together into one application advanced photo handling features, text and document editing tools, quickshape and freehand drawing utilities, and a large set of presentation templates for easy and quick photo design. You can use this full-featured application to create new designs or to edit both bitmap and vector images, as well as to convert them between formats. You can open and export image files into the most widely used formats, including RAW, JPEG, BMP, PNG, PSD, SVG, RTF, TIFF, and even PDF.

If only for the versatility that Xara Photo & Graphic Designer offers to any content and graphic designer, this is certainly a tool worth considering. Its integrated design will allow you to have all the professional utilities you need in one single application.

I received an e-mail from Magix software this morning that I thought was worth sharing. They are giving away the latest version of Xara Photo & Graphic Designer (ver 5) for free until Nov. 24. (I don't have any affiliation with Magix other than being on their mailing list because I have purchased their software before)

In a review PC World magazine calls it the "$89 Photoshop-Killer". Well I doubt that, but for people that can't afford Adobe but don't feel comfortable using pirated software, it might come close enough. I don't know because I haven't used it yet ... I'm downloading it now.

While admiting that Adobe users might flounder a bit at first with what seems to be a somewhat counter-intuitive user interface, the review claims that, "Directly comparing Photo & Graphic Designer's photo editing tools with Adobe Photoshop, the industry standard, leaves Adobe in a cloud of dust wondering what hit them," and "For a pro, Xara Photo & Graphic Designer does everything Photoshop can do, often with many fewer steps involved." The reviewer claimed that taking the time to learn the program was worth a couple of anti-acids.

It's pretty lame. Thank god I always install custom because if you don't it will install the Magix Ask Toolbar. Oh, and once I got my unlock code and used it, weeee, it unlocks the starter edition for life. Only one-click fixes, can't use any of the effects or advanced menu items. Of course maybe my code was expired or something.. wouldn't put it past them.

I know what it lacks. THat's why I put "photoshop killer" in parenthesis. It does do a very huge chunk of what most photographers (especially amateur ones) use photoshop for, though. Certainly as much as the product mentioned in the OP.
.

The average photographer, whatever that is, doesn't need full blown PS. I would bet the average Joe doesn't do any post at all. That is why there is still the words 'pro' and 'advanced amateur' in our vocabulary.

I've used Xara for years -- at work for artwork in my job as a corporate multimedia designer, and, now I'm retired, for myself -- I write books and use Xara Designer Pro 7 for illustrations and photo editing (plug: ).

It is an excellent program, combining vector art (like Adobe Illustrator) with bitmap editing (like Photoshop). For photographers -- the photo editing controls will do 90% of what you need, and then you can 'shell out' to Photoshop, Gimp, Paint Shop Pro, or Photoline if you need more effects.

IMHO, Xara Designer Pro 7 is flat-out the best value for money you'll ever find. Far easier and faster to use than Photoshop or Illustrator, at far, far less cost. It's a GREAT art program, with two user forums --

You have to convert to and 'export' JPEGs, and their page format is determined by the largest graphic frame you use, not the paper size you have specified - the graphic frame size is determined by any 'objects' within it.

Vector and raster graphics are both essential for digital designers, artists, and creatives - but what are the differences between the two? Vector graphics are 'resolution independent'. This means the graphics, built from lines, points, and curves, use mathematical equations to let you resize vector graphics without seeing a drop in quality. Raster graphics are made from pixels, which means they can look good at their intended size, but scaling up the image and maintaining quality isn't possible. There are pros and cons to using both.

The best graphic design software puts all the tools you need to create incredible artwork right at your fingertips. We got creative with top tools from Adobe, Affinity, Canva, and more to find out which is the best program for your next design project.

Like most Adobe apps, Illustrator is available via a standalone subscription, but also comes bundled into the Creative Cloud All Apps packages. That's a useful option if you're also using Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, or more.

The package includes Photo-Paint for photo manipulation, AfterShot to handle RAW files, PowerTRACE to convert bitmap images into vectors, and FontManager for organizing the text styles you do actually use.
