Solaris 10 (SunOS 5.10) is a multi-user, multi-tasking, multi-
threading operating environment, developed and sold by Sun
Microsystems (http://www.sun.com). Solaris is an implementation of the
Unix Operating System that draws on both System V(AT&T) and
Berkley(BSD) traditions. It has risen from little more than a research
project to become the dominant Unix Operating System in the
international marketplace today.
Solaris is commonly found in large corporations and educational
institutions that require concurrent, multiuser access on individual
hosts and between hosts connected via the internet. However it is also
rapidly being adopted by small business and individual developers,
through Sun's promotion of the "free Solaris" program (http://
www.sun.com/software/solaris).

Most PC users are not familiar with OS as one Sun made. Almost every
time they send an email message or open a file from a networkded servr
runnig Sun's Network File System (NFS) product, also Solaris is
transparently supporting many of today's existing internet
applications.

In the enterprise computing industry, Sun is synonymous with highly
available and reliable high-performance hardware, while Solaris 10 is
often the operating environment of choice to support database servers,
message queues, XMLWeb services, and Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE)
application servers. Sun’s hardware solutions are based around the
UltraSPARC integrated circuit technologies, which currently support
more than 100 processors in a single StarFire 15K server system. Sun
systems are typically used to run financial databases, large-scale
scientific computing environments, such as genetic sequencing, and
complex graphics rendering required by movie studios in post-
production.

People directly switching from Windows will have some trouble relating
to text-mode interfaces. But those who are already introduced with
Linux/Unix will learn Solaris easily. Because learning commands and to
apply them in terminal in case of Unix, Solaris is very necessary to
perform most administrative tasks (though anything can be done using
shell, and Solaris shell is most stable one).

Introduction to Solaris vi editor
========================

vi editor in Solaris is little bit different from vi editor of Linux.
You cannot use del to delete characters or backspace. Cannot change
cursor position using arrow keys when you are inserting characters.
All you have to do is using keys (alphabets) to modify contents.

Open a text file giving the following command
# vi filePath

Now if you want to modify some contents change the cursor position
using arrow keys of keyboard to there. It is command mode. Now you've
to change to insert mode by either pressing 'i' or 'a'.

i starts inserting previous to the cursor position.
a starts inserting next to the cursor position.

In insert mode you can insert characters but cannot change cursor
position. To change cursor position you have to come to command mode
again. To do that. Press escape(ESC) key.

After modification is complete you can do the following taks in
command mode.
Save the document: type
:w (':' following 'w'), w means write
Exit editing: type
:q (q means quit)
Override (if the file is readonly or you want to exit without any
modification at all)
:w!
Or
: q!
etc.

Or you can combine commands
:wq!

Installation of Solaris 10
===========================
* Prepare for installation (if you have windows on your system and no
extra primary partitions)
You have to leave the logical drive of your extended partition.
Delete the drive so that it comes to free space. I shall recommend
Partition Magic 8.0 (the most safe partition modifier software). Then
resize the extended partitoin so that the free space is out of the
extended partition. Now The free space would located as unallocated.
Create new primary partiion there. That's it. Remember size of this
partition. Now activate this partition. If you don't know how to then

* Start your installation now entering the Solaris DVD/CD.
Superb instructions are available from Sun. I will recommend you use
them.

For system administrators who need to install Solaris many machines at
a time then seek out here(You have to use jumpstart).

For installation of Solaris and OpenSolaris systems you might need to
create a new primary partition. It's better if you use Partition Magic
(now owned by Symantec).
This software has been uploaded in the files section.
