Two special matches between former rikishi were held, with Iwatomo (former Sekiwake Aoyama) defeating Ooyama (former Komusubi Hokutofuji), and Araiso (former Sekiwake Kotoyuuki) defeating Oguruma (former Makuuchi Kotoekou), exciting the arena. Iwatomo calmly stated, "I lend my chest to the younger rikishi every day, both at the heya and at the training center. We both tried to avoid injury." He still weighs 160 kg.
