Yokozuna Houshouryuu  won his second yusho after two tournaments. He started in the second round and defeated Ounokatsu, Churanoumi, Tobizaru, and Hiradoumi to advance to the finals. In the final, he defeated Abi by sukuinage. In his victory interview, he commented, "I wanted to somehow win and do my best in preparation for Haru Basho. I have yet to win a yusho as a yokozuna, as you know.." Addressing the 9,030 fans who came to the Kokugikan in the snowy weather, he said, "I'm filled with gratitude to all the fans who came out in the heavy snow." He fought with great spirit from the first match, and won a prize of 2.5 million yen. He had a supporter on his left knee. "I'm fine," he said when asked about it. Hiradoumi got the Fighting Spirit Prize. And Aonishiki? He was defeated in the third round.  In the second round , he beat Oushouma by yorikiri with his characteristic low attack, but in the third round he was beaten by Tamawashi who raised his body with some pushing and thrusting, losing by oshidashi.. Regarding fatigue, he simply said, "I'm fine." Regarding resuming sumo training, he indicated he is in no rush, saying, "Once I get my body in shape."
