Anway..on to the post:
If you plan to completely avoid the sun this summer make sure you are
getting an adequate amount of vitamin D. "D" helps with absorption of
calcium and phosphorous too-resulting in stronger bones. Vitamin D is
manufactured when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Use of sunblock
inhibits the production, so experts recommend getting 10-15 minutes
per day of unprotected sun exposure-then slather it on to prevent skin
cancer! The outpouring of medical advice these days can be
overwhelming. But I suppose it is a double edged sword. We have never
known as much as we do about the human body-despite still not knowing
exactly why Summer SAD strikes some people! So take advantage of this
nugget of wisdom and help prevent future cancers and promote your well
being. If you don't get your "D" from sunlight pay attention to your
diet. Which brings me to me next point about fish oils.....on second
thought, my coveted cod liver oil deserves its own post. Suffice to
say....it gives you vitamin D. Here is a list of foods to eat:
* cod liver oil
* sardines
* herring
* salmon
* tuna
* milk
* cheese
* eggs
* fortified margarine
* fortified breakfast cereals
Don't go overboard, too much vitamin D is bad, too. Everything in
moderation, right? If you suspect you are deficient, or have problems
absorbing fat soluble vitamins (like me, because of Celiac Disease),
consult with your doctor to check your levels. There is a
perscription grade vitamin D. If you have any doubts as to your
intake of D make sure to check with your physician.
If you have thyroid problems it is also interesting to note that D is
necessary for thyroid production in the pituitary gland. This warrants
its own post, too!
