After looking through a handful of different translations, I am going
with Ciardi's. I like it because it is written in easy English and it
has a summary at the beginning and end of each chapter. If the version
you bought is already losing you in the first couple chapters, I'd
recommend you try this.

I've got the Penguin edition, but it still has all my line notes from
college. The problem will be decrypting my short-hand...

That's the same translation I finally decided on too. I really
appreciate the easy English and the "how to read Dante" at the start
of the Ciardi's translation.
You'll laugh but some how I initially ended up with an Italian/English
version which was incredibly confusing!
