In less than a week from now, I will be flying from New York to Fort Lauderdale, then to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. From March 9th-22nd, I will join a disaster relief team on the ground in Port-au-Prince and around Southern Haiti to provide aid to a country that continues to undergo an inexorable amount of suffering. As I'm sure you're all aware, the recent disaster in Haiti has been called "the Tsunami of the Western Hemisphere". Over 200,000 people have died, and millions more are in need of immediate aid. In the aftermath of the earthquake, relief teams have been deployed all over Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas bringing food, clean water, shelter, and medical supplies to those affected by this catastrophe. My contribution will undoubtedly be small, but I have agreed to sacrifice more tranquil opportunities for my spring break in order to play a role in extending a hand to those in such desperate need.
Over the past few years, my involvement in environmental and social justice activism has given meaning, purpose, and direction to my life. And in the aftermath of the earthquake it has become apparent that the breadth of the damage was largely caused and exacerbated by Haiti's plagued history of colonialism, environmental exploitation and degradation, and international debt. Although we cannot erase the past, we can utilize this heavy moment in history to reassert our understanding of the interconnected nature of the world and our role within it. We can extend beyond a 'global consciousness' and grasp a 'global responsibility'. With this understanding, we can actualize our potential to affect change and realize how our actions reverberate across physical and imaginary borders, to accomplish extraordinary things.
I would like to thank you for your support, friendship, guidance, and love in recent years, regardless of how or why our paths have crossed. I have never participated in any direct, on-the-ground effort remotely close to the intensity of what I will undoubtedly experience in the coming weeks. And although this will be a shot in the dark for me, I will undoubtedly keep all of you in my mind and in my heart as I work sunrise to sunset to extend a hand to the people of Haiti this March.
