DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM:

Seeking 1Ls and 2Ls for many unpaid, full-time, 8-12 week (min. 8 week) Virtual Summer (June 3, 2020 to no later than Aug. 28, 2020) Legal Externships working in the Office of General Counsel, Patent Trial and Appeal Board and th Trademark Trial and Appeals Board. Externs assist Administrative Patent Judges, Trademark Judges, or Senior Attorneys in the OGC's Office with the following types of duties and responsibilities: for the PTAB and TTAB, reviewing and analyzing case files to identify factual and legal issues; researching statutes, legislative history, relevant case law, applicable USPTO rules, regulations, standards, and procedures, as needed, to analyze issues and points of law; preparing written work product including legal memoranda, bench briefs, orders, and decisions and assisting in proofreading orders and decisions, verifying citations, and ensuring procedural requirements; assisting with docket management, scheduling and conducting of conference calls, and scheduling of filing due dates and time periods with the parties; and assisting with other projects critical to the USPTO’s mission. For the OGC, assisting attorneys by researching case law, legislative history, and factual issues in pending Federal Circuit and district court cases involving patent and other IP issues, drafting of legal briefs, motions, discovery responses, and other legal memoranda, research and assistance in the preparation of documents involving a wide range of business and administrative law matters, including labor and employment law, contracts, information and privacy.

The USPTO grants U.S. intellectual property rights for patents and trademarks and provides inventors exclusive rights over their discoveries.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
Must be U.S. citizen or national. Must have outstanding academic record and superior writing skills.
