Thereading and resource lists are found at Readings & Resources/eReserves - LibGuides at American Public University System. Make a note of the Effective date of the list so you view the one applicable to your course. Listings with a future effective date may not be complete until 30 days prior to the course start date. Current and future lists are also attached below.

If you have problems finding or accessing your textbook or required readings, contact the Course Materials team at e...@apus.edu. If you are having trouble with Limespring, virtual labs, quizzes, or any other items in the classroom that are not eBooks or reading related, please reach out to classroo...@apus.edu

Zero Textbook Costs (ZTC) means that there is no cost for required textbooks, workbooks, lab manuals, readers, or specialized software like online homework systems. There is a state law (SB 1359) that requires California Community Colleges to identify Zero Textbook Costs course sections.

Los Rios Community College District faculty are being encouraged to find ways to make their courses ZTC. This could include the adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER), using library materials, and curating other learning resources that are freely available to students.

Los Rios Community College District's online class schedule is available on the college website without having to login with your wID and password. This section explains how to search for and view courses in the online class schedule that have been designated as ZTC. This means you should not be required to purchase textbooks, workbooks, lab manuals, readers, or specialized software like online homework systems to complete the course. You might be asked to purchase supplemental materials that are required to successfully complete the course. Examples of supplemental materials are lab coats and kits, goggles, a calculator, blue books, scantron forms, art supplies, etc.

eServices is the platform in which you actually enroll in classes and can only be accessed by logging in with your wID and password. This section explains how to search for and view courses in eServices that have been designated as ZTC.

The Low Cost designation can also be applied in the textbook cost filter. The Low Cost symbol is a dollar sign in a down arrow and means that a student will pay $30 or less for all required instructional materials in that course section.

eServices is the platform in which you actually enroll in classes and can only be accessed by logging in with your wID and password. eServices lists several options in the Instruction Mode filter. You should also pay attention to the information that is listed in the Days and Times column because this will help you understand when and if you are expected to be present (either online or in-person).

My high school math textbooks felt like a barrier preventing me from connecting with the teacher and discipline, but I think I have found a way to use the CPM resources to forge deeper relationships with my students.

Instead of spending my prep periods developing different types of linear equations (some with integer solutions, others that include decimals and fractions, etc), this fall I will spend it looking at a set of linear equations and thinking about Brandon, Laura, Deshawn, and the other individuals in my class. Where will they get tripped up? How can I group them together so that they can have productive conversations about the different ways they could attack each equation? What system should I put in place to make sure students who get stuck can find a way out without having to call me over to the group?

Where do you and your colleagues fall on the decision to use teacher-developed vs outsider-developed classroom resources? What are some of the costs and benefits that you all weighed in making the decision that works for you? Regardless of the decision you have made, how do you ensure that teachers have time to think deeply about curriculum materials AND their students?

Prior to registering, you can view the required textbooks for a class from Class Search and Enroll. After you have registered for a class, you can also see the required textbooks from View My Classes.

At Contra Costa College, we recognize that the high costs of textbooks serve as a barrier that impacts student success. ZTC (Zero Textbook Cost) courses do not require students to buy textbooks. Courses designated as ZTC eliminate conventional textbook costs by using alternative instructional materials and methodologies, including Open Educational Resources (OER).

ZTC and OER implementations have helped me afford and focus on my academic career. Not worrying about the extra cost of class materials is a HUGE stress saver and a step closer to ensuring an equitable opportunity of higher education for all.

Zero Textbook Cost, or ZTC for short, are digital textbooks available for FREE to students. Many instructors at College of the Canyons have chosen to use these textbooks, which are created by using Open Educational Resources (OER) content in their classrooms to cut educational costs for students. As textbook prices rise, more and more courses are utilizing ZTC textbooks to provide a free alternative to traditional textbooks.

Yes! Classes that use Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) textbooks are listed in the class schedule. You can click on a class section to verify that it is a ZTC textbook course. There will be a note explaining that the class uses a no-cost digital textbook.

It's easy! To enroll in a class without any textbook fees, open the schedule of classes and filter class results by Course Types. Then, check the box, Zero Textbook Cost". The class results will automatically populate to show only ZTC classes. Watch the short video below to learn more.

Your instructor will direct you on how to access your free textbook. You may also find this information in your course Orientation Letter, and in Canvas. You may also explore ZTC Textbooks for a full list of the ZTC textbooks developed and adopted by College of the Canyons faculty. ZTC classes typically offer instructional material for free in a digital form.

Printed versions of the ZTC textbooks may be offered at the Bookstore for a fee. Visit coc.bncollege.com for more information. Free printing is also available to College of the Canyons students at the ASG Computer Labs.

I am taking an online class that requires a textbook to be purchased. I have found the book through my first simple search using the Google search engine. The website where I found the book seems to be foreign and not related to the original authors. Is it ethical for me to use the free version that I have easily found online and not purchase the book?

Edit: I think there is a valid distinction between resources found on controversial websites like SciHub and the Google search engine. Furthermore, my intentions were to purchase the book before I stumbled upon it in the first few search results.

If you're asking whether this will be seen as ethical by a university administration, the answer is no. The law probably lines up with the ethics that fall into the professional norms of the university admin.

Which gets us to the professional norms of your field. Some fields are big supporters of free access to knowledge. In these fields, the arxiv and scihub are popular. Downloading anything illegally if it's academic knowledge would generally be accepted as ethical within the professional norms of those fields.

Personally, I believe academic knowledge should be much freer than it is, and everyone should have access to the work we do. I'm not studying physics because I want to get rich. I study this because it's beautiful and it's important, and because these are fundamental questions for humanity, and answers should be shared with humanity. We all benefit from living in a society that's informed about itself and the world around it.

Rather than asking if it is ethical, I recommend that you be open and honest and listen to your conscience. You can help yourself to clarify your conscience by consulting with the people who are directly concerned with this question. So, in this case, I recommend that you email the authors of the textbook and the publisher of the textbook and then ask them how they feel about you downloading their book instead of purchasing it (you could probably find their contact information by searching online). If they reply that they have no problem with that, then your conscience should be perfectly clear to download the book without paying for it. But if they reply that they are not happy about that, then you should do what your conscience tells you, even if that means paying for a book that most other students are downloading at no charge. Your conscience is priceless and is worth much more than the cost of a textbook.

A full refund will be given in the original form of payment for Textbooks and Access Cards during the first week of your class. Textbooks can be returned in person during bookstore business hours or they may be mailed back to the bookstore. You need to provide the original receipt and a copy of your class schedule showing the start date. We do not provide return shipping labels. Please pack securely if mailed! Damaged returns will not be refunded. We would recommend using a method of shipping that you can track. Any purchases after the first week of class are considered non-returnable.
