BBC REPORTER FOUND DEADA journalist working for the BBC in Afghanistan was found dead a day after he was abducted in Helmand province. The body of Abdul Samad Rohani was found near the city of Lashkar Gah on 8 June, say Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and local Afghan groups. He appeared to have been tortured before he was killed. Rohani worked with the BBC Kabul bureau and was the Pashto service reporter for the BBC World Service in Helmand. He had also worked with Afghan's largest independent news agency, Pajhwok, since 2004, says RSF. Colleagues became concerned when they could not reach Rohani by cell phone on Saturday, the day before he was killed, reports CPJ. The BBC paid tribute to Rohani, saying his "courage and dedication have been a key part of the BBC's reporting from Afghanistan in recent years." A colleague and friend said he "became the voice of the people of Helmand." Helmand province, which lies along the Pakistan border, is home to some of the worst clashes between the government and Taliban and al-Qaeda militants, as well as a flourishing opium trade. According to RSF, Rohani had received threatening phone calls accusing him of supporting the Kabul government and boycotting news put out by the Taliban. Rohani's home was the target of an attack in 2006. There have been a number of attacks on journalists in Afghanistan this year. The Kabul-based South Asia Media Commission says five Afghan journalists were killed in 2007, including freelance reporter Ajmal Naqshbandi, who was beheaded in Helmand by Taliban captors. He had been working with Italian reporter Daniele Mastrogiacomo, who was released. Christopher Price BBC presenter Christopher Price was found dead at his London home yesterday. The 34-year-old, who hosted the Liquid News entertainment programme, was seen as one of the corporation's rising stars. It was not immediately known how he died. Police are investigating and a postmortem is planned, but it was unclear whether his death is being treated as suspicious. Liquid News was the flagship show for the digital channel BBC Choice and was repeated late at night on BBC1. Stuart Murphy, controller of BBC Choice, said last night: 'Christopher was a unique broadcaster, with enormous passion and extraordinary potential. 'His tragic death comes as a complete shock and will sadden everyone who knew him. His acerbic wit and boundless cheek made him an absolute pleasure to watch, and an entertaining friend to many, both in front of and behind the camera. 'Our thoughts are with the people who were closest to him.' A spokesman for Scotland Yard said police were called to the house in Wells Street, near Oxford Circus, by ambulance crews who reported a man collapsed. 'As with all sudden deaths, the police are investigating the circumstances around it,' he added. 'A post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course and an inquest is expected to be opened.' Liquid News was launched in May 2000 and it was widely reported last year that Mr Price had signed a £250,000-a-year deal with the BBC. Openly gay, he often described himself to the media as a 'fat, bald homosexual'. Last night's edition of Liquid News was replaced by another program Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-110966/Riddle-BBC-presenter-dead-home.html#ixzz0h8BumNr7 ================= http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/bbc-tv-presenter-speight-found-dead_1065475 13 April 2008 23:25 Bbc Tv Presenter Speight 'Found Dead'Top Headlines
Bbc Tv Presenter Speight 'Found Dead'A body of a man believed to be missing BBC kids' TV presenter MARK SPEIGHT has been found in a remote area of London's Paddington railway station, U.K. police have announced. Officers state the cause of death of the man, who was found at 10am on Sunday (13Apr08), is "unexplained" - but confirm death did not occur due to the man being hit by a train. Speight, 42, was reported missing last Monday (7Apr08), three months after the tragic death of his fiancee and fellow children's TV presenter Natasha Collins, who was found dead in the bath of their North London home in January (08). Relatives of the star have been informed of the discovery, but no formal identification has yet taken place. Fears grew for the TV star's wellbeing after he failed to meet with Collin's mother Carmen, who reported he was in a "fragile state of mind" after the death of the 31-year-old, urging him "not to give up" during his troubled time of grief. CCTV recorded the last sighting of the star, which showed him boarding a train on London Underground's Bakerloo Line, which stops at Paddington station as part of its route. In January, BBC star Speight was arrested in connection with the death of his partner on suspicion of murder and supplying cocaine, but no charges were brought against him. Collin's death was recorded as death by misadventure, after she had taken a deadly mix of cocaine, sleeping tablets and alcohol. She also had burns covering 60 per cent of her body from scalding hot water from the bath she was found in, a Westminister coroner found. A popular kids' TV presenter, Speight worked on BBC children's art show SmArt for 14 years, but quit the show in February (08) after the death of Collins. A BBC representative says, "This is very sad news and our thoughts and sympathies are with Mark's family and friends. Mark was a hugely talented and very popular presenter for many years." ================ Also: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20185929,00.html ================ also http://www.upi.com/Entertainment_News/2009/04/20/Welsh-TV-star-22-found-dead/UPI-67211240230639/ Welsh TV star, 22, found deadPONTYPRIDD, Wales, April 20 (UPI) -- A 22-year-old actress, who was a longtime cast member of the recently wrapped BBC Wales TV drama "Belonging," has been found dead, police said. The Daily Telegraph said Stephanie Parker, the actress who played Stacey Weaver on the show that ended its run last week, was discovered hanged Saturday. "I can confirm that we investigated a report of a deceased woman on open ground near Pontypridd," a police spokesman told the newspaper. "The incident is not regarded as suspicious and a report has been passed on to the HM coroner." "Everyone at BBC Wales -- especially all those who worked on 'Belonging' -- is extremely saddened at the news of Stephanie's tragic death," Clare Hudson, BBC Wales' head of programs, English Language, told The Telegraph. "Stephanie was an immensely talented actor who, as Stacey, played a central role in 'Belonging' since she was 15, as well as appearing in other BBC productions such as 'Casualty.' (She) also worked with BBC Wales Radio Drama Department on productions for Radio Four," Hudson said.
