2009 SKKU International Summer Semester
Established in 1398 as a Royal Academy, Sungkyunkwan initiated higher education in Korea in the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).
In the 21st century Sungkyunkwan University has made remarkable advances towards becoming a global leader in research and education. This is especially true since Samsung joined our foundation in 1996 and through its generous investments made it possible to launch several programs. These include the Graduate School of Business in collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Business, the Sungkyunkwan Advanced Institute of Nanotechnology (SAINT), the School of Mobile Telecommunications Engineering and the Graduate School of China.
In addition, through the efforts of our outstanding faculty the Korean Government awarded SKKU 28 long term Brain Korea 21 Research Grants. Today SKKU is recognized as one of the most progressive institutions in the country and will emerge to become a world class university.
Our Concept
We are living in an era where global prosperity is being threatened by relying on old processes and structures that cannot cope with the new, fast changing environment.Efforts to discover new pathways to a prosperous and sustainable future are needed.
Therefore, for the 2009 SKKU ISS we have chosen the theme of Sustainable Global Prosperity as it denotes a positive future oriented goal. Such a goal offers hope for humanity as we navigate our way through the process of globalization. The means through which we might achieve such a desirable outcome are complex.
We will explore four sub-themes within which are contained many of the most pressing dilemmas facing humankind. The sub-themes are
1) Climate and Environment
2) Human Development
3) Wealth and
4) Innovation.
Also, once again, we will cultivate a learning process that is collaborative and holistic. Furthermore, both integrative seminars and our 2009 ISS Global Forum will ensure theoretical and practical linkages during our intense three week summer semester. What establishes continuity with our successful and globalized 2008 ISS is that we continue to view the human ability to innovate as the invisible thread that binds creativity and rogress in a movement towards global prosperity.
