Hi Sulu DC fam,

Who's ready for our annual hip-hop showcase?

Miss Fortune: Spotlight on AAPI Women in Hip-Hop
Saturday, July 16 at 7:30 pm
U Street Music Hall, 1115A U Street NW DC
Tickets are $10 online and $15 at the door. Buy your tickets NOW: http://ticketfly.com/event/49947/
Please note that this is an 18+ show.

This all-female hip-hop showcase will highlight the true definition of “Amazians.” The powerful lyrics, songs and movement of this fierce lineup of Asian American and Pacific Islander women will shatter all glass ceilings and minority myths. Don’t think “Tiger Moms” or even Tiger daughters. No Dragon Ladies here. These women know boom bap, and they’re coming to show and prove.

FEATURING

  • Bay Area sensation ROCKY RIVERA
  • New York rapper-violinist duo MISNOMER(S)
  • Hip-hop dance performance by KICKROCKS CREW
  • HBO spoken word poet KELLY ZEN-YIE TSAI as host and performer
  • Sounds by THE PINSTRIPED REBEL on the decks

AFTERPARTY: Jin Lounge (2017 14th Street NW DC 20009)

Funded in part by the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

We're all about passing on information about great opportunities. Here are a couple we've come across:

Register for DC Desi Summer 2011 (July 21-24, DC): DC Desi Summer a 3-day summer radical youth program for South Asian American students that provides a radical and inclusive space for youth of South Asian heritage to examine key social justice issues and take action. Community activists, youth leaders, advocates, and academics will facilitate workshops and activities that focus on topics such as surveillance, racial profiling, and immigration; gender-based violence; arts and activism; and state-sponsored violence. This program costs only $20 which covers all meals and housing, if necessary. For more information and to register, please visit http://dcdesisummer.weebly.com/ or contact dcdesi...@gmail.com for any questions. Applications are due as soon as possible -- the extended deadline has already passed!

Artists Exchange Festival (November 10-19, Asian Arts Initiative, Philadelphia, PA): A great opportunity for performance and theater artists! Looking for up to 8 artists representing diverse performance disciplines—including but not limited to: dance, music, spoken word, and theater. Each artist who is selected to participate will receive a $1,000 honorarium. Travel stipends and accommodations will be provided for artists who live outside the Philadelphia area. The Artists Exchange includes three major components: A weekend festival featuring participants' existing work, a week-long series of group workshops and a public presentation of what is learned and created from the week. More information is available here: http://www.asianartsinitiative.org/involved/callPerformer.php
